JBT: I absolutely 100% agree with you regarding Trinity's death. I do, on a whole, agree with the sequels needed to be darker. The first film is very dark, which is why is remains my favorite. Here Neo is first jolted to discover the world is not as we blind sheep have always been led to blindly believe, and that is much of the appeal of the story in the first place. I think you hit the nail on the head in reference to the shiny, flashy jewelry, because that is exactly what struck me about Reloaded: It's all flash and not enough substance for my taste. It is too bright and shiny in contrast to the dark brooding atmosphere of the first film.

I watched the Bava. I'd rate it somewhere in the 7's. It sure was good to look at - the colour, and lights, actually reminded me of Maddin's 'Careful'. It was a visual chow-down. I loved the scenes of descending into madness - the never-ending rooms, the never-ending staircases, and also the mad stares.

I found the character of the doctor unintentionally funny....at times hilarious. His bold, stoic naivety, the way he just charges in.

I liked it. But enough to commit precious upvotes to its cause? Not sure yet.

In other news, I watched half an hour of THE worst zombie flic I have ever half-seen. The Dead. Not even laughably bad. Just B.A.D.

Alright, good to hear that: I'm putting 'Operazione Paura''s life in your hands now. I've got my own priorities before it. Anxious to hear if you like 'Cronos' better or less well.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2012 6:11:16 PM PDT
Hopefully I watch 'Cronos' today. I have seen parts of it before - on cable a few moons ago - and liked what I saw.

I watched another Altman last night....and I liked it. I just want you to know that we can still be friends. Our bond can survive Altman.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2012 6:19:12 PM PDT
Altman: I don't hate him by any means, but he's one of those like Coppola who did a few important things and largely rode on that reputation throughout his career, not producing much else worthy of attention. Taking everything he's done into account, I don't rate him well.
What was the other Altman you saw? It may be one of the few I like!

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2012 6:22:25 PM PDT
[Toby tentatively mentions the title] McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

[Jon cautiously thinks of something positive to say] Interesting photography in that 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller'. Julie Christie and Keith Carradine put out the best acting efforts I thought.
Not my kind of western, it was; not bad for Altman in that period. I'd say it's his 3rd best of the '70s, and that's not saying much.

I miss Zeph... now there was a good Altman nay-sayer! Maybe I should also mention that 'M & Mrs. M' was one of the favorite movies of the '70s of Manny Farber, our Country's hippest film cricket. Oh, and he (being a world renowned painter as well) even did a painting in honor of it, called (wouldn't ya know it) - 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller'.

From an interview with a friend of Farber's several years back (When he and Kael were still alive):

Q: "How do Manny and Kael get on these days?"

A: "Better than ever. I think they've disagreed about almost every film ever made - except McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)"

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2012 6:46:04 PM PDT
"Interesting photography in that"

Yeah, I thought so too. I loved the back-drop, the lush greens, browns and whites, contrasted with the striking (mainly reddish) ochres of the indoor scenes. And Carradine was great. He injected much optimism.

It almost *isn't* a western. A quasi northern.

And what of 'Diary of the Dead'?

Question: I have the Evil Dead group on my Netflix Queue. Wasn't Army of Darkness a prequel? Or are they unrelated? Should I watch that one first?

J.B. Taylor says:
Army of Darkness is part 3 of the trilogy, it seems different because Universal wanted this installment to stand out on its own without any moniker to distinguish it as being Part 3 of the Evil Dead Trilogy.

But if you're looking for a prequel to the series, according to ChaCha.com (And weirdly enough that's a real name) 'Within The Woods' is known as the prequel to The Evil Dead.

Q,
Copied and pasted from the Rate the Last Movie You Watched thread....

George A. Romero's Land of the Dead: So much better second time 'round. Plus, this time, I found myself well and truly cheering for the zombies. Eat the Rich! ;)
6.9/10

George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead: Kinda found footage. Kinda cool. Romero returns to day one here, updated and modernised. The digital age comes under focus. 6/10

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead: The Dead series sinks to its lowest low. A contender for worst Romero. A bunch of losers whining and warring, all in spectacularly stupid fashion. 3/10

Agreed!

And brickbats to 'Survival' for animal cruelty! Let them eat the stupid people and leave those horses and stuff alone!
