Well, Loungers, this is my last night broadcasting to you from my secure wireless connection. The landlord is switching it off. Until (or if) I can get it reinstated, I'll have to take my chances with cadging from some neighbor with one bar. I tried it last night and it worked OK for posting purposes, but I certainly won't be shopping with it.

Does it count as stealing if I have no idea whose signal it is, and it's just free-floating in the atmosphere? In good Lutheran fashion, I'll probably still use it and just feel racked with guilt about it.

On the docket this evening? Making egg salad and watching Season 6 (5 here Stateside) of "Lewis". My thrilling life continues.

Re: "Does it count as stealing if I have no idea whose signal it is, and it's just free-floating in the atmosphere?"

That's an interesting question. I have no idea if wifi is like a radio signal that doesn't weaken no matter how many are picking it up, or if it's like a website that can crash from too many visitors.

I assume it's more like a radio signal, but I'm too busy at the moment to look it up.

What would Plato say? Or Socrates? or Abe Lincoln? They never even used wi-fi, those Luddites.

What?
This is a catastrophe! We must have the Mistress in the Alibi Lounge each and every evening-- otherwise, things will get out of hand quickly, I am sure.
As far as stealing if you don't know whose signal it is, it is probably a free signal, otherwise it would be password protected. You may have a Starbucks or some other such place with free WiFi that is transmitting one-bar strength to your house.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Nah, when my neighbor and his wife are watching netflix...internet is SLOOOW running over here.

Luckily, I can tell when they go to bed! And he's my buddy, so I don't feel as bad. :P

Thanks for the well wishes y'all.

We just found out that mum and bubs can leave the hospital and take up digs in a suite at one of our local 5 star hotels...the Hilton Hotel to be precise. How sweet is that! No extra charge, meals provided, and servants!...well, I'm the servant, but that's cool as I'm kinda just floating around at the moment....cloud 9.....and for all those who know how important this is, bubs is sleeping very well. I could weep about how well he is sleeping, especially since our first kiddo was The Worst Sleeper Ever [trademarked, stamped and approved].

Anyway, just touching base for the brief moment I have off, and hope y'all are watching some good films, reading some good books, and generally livin' it up.

And no, we did not pass Eli's Auto Shop on the way to the hospital....it was Eli's Pet Emporium!

Peace.

I won't be around much for the next week. I'm off on vacay and won't be at a computer much at all.

As Sloany said, Peace!

Re: Dr. Wilson

Sorry, this is SO last page...but I thought I had replied.

I didn't know brain cancer was his specialty?

But they aren't the same. Usually when a doc suspects a brain issue they consult neurology or oncology or both, depending on what the issue is. If it's cancer, the oncologist would dictate chemo/radiation, etc., but ultimately the whole lot would defer to neurosurgery to determine if the brain issue was operable or not.

Sorry, I work in a hospital. Fun times.

I'm not into TV, but I keep up with those 2 shows via netflix, because they are entertaining...regardless of their ludicrousness and medical accuracy.

I agree with you about Dempsey. When the show first started I remember thinking, "They have GOT to be kidding!" However, ol' Meredith Grey isn't looking so hot these days either. Apparently she had a baby in real life and gained weight, but her face even looks different. It's weird.

Truly all the best to the li'l shaver and fam. Hope to hear more about your guy's livin' it up, Servant Sloany!

Hahaha!!! Maybe that was supposed to be her "charm". There was that episode where she actually did drown, and unfortunately...err, i mean miraculously...came back to life.

Practically every character in the cast has come back from the dead. Except George, who I wanted to live!! Maybe in the final season the writers, completely exhausted of any possible further plot lines or ways to kill off any more characters, will reveal that all of the doctors are, in fact, vampires or ghosts of some sort. All the teenybopper twilight fans will pee their pants with delight as the rest of us throw our dvds into the fire.

Kelly says:
Actually, it is their responsibility to secure their signal. IIRC someone in Germany got in trouble when someone downloaded kiddie porn over his unsecured connection - he provided access to the perv - unwittingly, but he did.

Wifi is a limited bandwidth thing, you can only pump so much in and out, but if you are not trying to stream music or full motion video (TV, movie) it won't matter much to either of you. As a rule, though, I will NOT transmit credit card info on unsecured networks.

By the power vested in me by Google, I tracked down a "Warragul Pet Emporium," but no Eli's.

I wonder if Warragul is the little bandito's middle name, if Mister Sloan passed that as well?

No, actually, Sloany leveled with us on another thread: Eli = "Family name (on the missus' side)" ... and that's that.

This signal would seem to belong to a business, maybe one of the medical offices. There's a nursing home next to me with a 'guest' connection; also one bar. All the neighbors I know have secure connections. I'll be trying one of those when my jones gets too bad and I've just gotta check what the Loungers are up to. Otherwise, this will be an excellent opportunity for me to go cold turkey with the Internet shopping and otherwise get a great deal more done around the homestead with these fine long late spring evenings (haha!)

I'll be getting new tenants in next to me very soon & seeing as the the router is over on their side and staying there, maybe I could persuade them to go halfsies with me on the Internet, as my landlord and I were doing. In my experience most people are not content to exist without cable & etc. like I do, and they will probably want to sign up for wireless before long. Every few months Time-Warner cable will send a rep over knocking on my door trying to get me to sign up (as if their weekly harrassing circulars aren't sufficient.) I told the last guy, thank you but I wasn't interested in cable. He looked at me funny and opined that it 'sounded lonely'. Good god, whatever did people do before the invention of cable?! Why didn't they just kill themselves from the loneliness? I smiled sweetly and said that I managed to keep busy and for him to have a nice day. Meanwhile I was *thinking* "Get off my porch, ya *&$@! bas_tid!"

I'm sure he had a quota, but I will not be strong-armed into cable through peer pressure. I stay up way too late as it is watching DVDs & network late night comedians; if I had cable, I'd have to quit my job in order to get my money's worth. :p

Hikari:

My apartment building has never had cable, and I don't miss it. Once some salesman came around, trying to get us all interested, and when I told the guy I didn't want cable he looked at me as if I were a madman.

(I am, of course, but he couldn't have known that.)

JB: The signal doesn't weaken by being received--but the more users there are on the same connection, the slower it will get.

Only so much water can go through a pipe at the same time.
