- Monty (Emma, I did see that Lawyer's Cut and found it very entertaining and filled with great anecdotes...but I'm not a big fan of the Grail and find it a tad overrated, although I still love the TV show and Life of Brian)

AP: It's almost as ridiculous as putting The Black Cauldron as the first Disney animated feature.

Posted on Aug 23, 2012 6:24:34 PM PDT
What's more ridiculous: Phantom Menace being the first 'Star Wars' flic to appear on this game, or Phantom Menace getting a slew of up-votes?

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 23, 2012 6:25:35 PM PDT
I'd say it's equal.

Gee, I don't know how aghast Stanley Kubrick would've been at 'The Phantom Menace', but I do know that he thought higher of 'Modern Romance' than any other comedy in his lifetime, with the possible exception of Fellini's 'I Vitelloni'.

'Modern Romance' is also a great fav of Larry David, naturally, who knows a thing or two about how to make obnoxious, non-empathetic protagonists that we nonetheless find hilarious and interesting.

I'm not saying you guys don't know as much about filmmaking as Kubrick, or as much about comedy as David... wait, yes I am. No offense intended!

It's a sorry week when Lucas's steamingest pile gets near twice as high on the list as one of Albert Brooks's best movies. Tastes, differ, but this definitely is a case where 100,000,000 flies CAN be wrong.

Here's a deal: I'll watch 'Phantom Menace' a second time with as open a mind as I can muster (it's been 13 years; I've nearly erased it from my memory in this time,) if one of you Down-voters of 'Modern Romance' makes the effort to view Albert's film ONCE. How 'bout it...no good?

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 23, 2012 9:01:32 PM PDT
When the gang has made up it's mind (notice the singular), well, trying to change it is like pissing into the wind.

And don't do it, Jon. It's not worth it. More than one viewing of 'Phantom Menace' may leave you permanently scarred, warped, and one step closer to becoming a member of the hive mind. Think before you leap. I'm begging you, man!

Toberon, hey ya, I believe I could almost re-watch the entire works of Jean Vigo (Ŕ propos de Nice / Taris / Zéro de conduite / L'Atalante) in the time if would take to watch Episode I again.
Yet the offer stands. I really have forgotten most of it.
It's important sometimes to watch things like that to remember how bad movies can get. It helps us appreciate the good things all the better. In theory.

The beauty of contrast. Without Portman's Padme, would we appreciate the colour, vibrancy and character of Neeson's Qui-Gon?

HAHA!

- What I remember best is... I wanted to forget the `Menace` like Jodie Foster wanted to forget the rapists in 'The Accused'.
+ Modern masterpiece... you know what this outfit needs? A wrist wallet!
