The master of theater and drama is for most people, (myself included) William Shakespeare, and his plays are among, if not the single, greatest plays ever written; and some of them are arguably among the greatest literary works.

There have been numerous film adaptations of his plays; some good, bad, great, and outright atrocious. So I decided it would be a fun idea to have a poll of some of the best known film adaptations of the Master's plays.

Rules:

1. NO DOWN VOTING! (Down voting Shakespeare is the same as down voting Hitchcock-- immoral.)

2. You get to vote once per day.

3. 3 votes-- use them wisely.

4. No more than 3 film adaptations per play.

5. When a film reaches 100, they will be entered as a winner.

6. No films that tell other stories based on Shakespeare plays (10 Things I Hate About You, West Side Story, Ran, etc.).

The films for voting:

Antony and Cleopatra (1972) - 0
As You Like It (2006) - 0

+ Romeo and Juliet (1968)... although (and I know this is blasphemy) I prefer the 1996 version over 1968.
++ Much Ado About Nothing (1993)... Emma Thompson is truly fantastic.

The ignorant man in me would be on an angry rant upon hearing that statement, but instead I'm intrigued. What do you prefer about the DiCaprio film?

There was a more recent Hamlet film (unseen by me) from 2000 starring Ethan Hawke. I was wondering if you left that off your list on purpose.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 9, 2013 7:07:35 AM PST
Yeah, I kind of did on purpose. I'll add it for you if you'd like to play.

PoM: I can see at least one important film missing--the 1968 Peter Hall Midsummer Night's Dream with Diana Rigg, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, David Warner, Ian Holm, and Ian Richardson. A lovely, lovely version.I would also add Papp's film version of Much Ado with Waterston and Widdoes (1973).

Also: considering how heavily it is cut, does the 1995 version of Othello merit inclusion?

WAS: I'll add on the 68 version of Midsummer.

As for Branagh's Othello: I haven't seen it in quite some time, but I did like it very much when I first saw it. It's not Olivier by a long shot though.

Have you gotten a chance to see the Kline version of Midsummer yet?

Kenneth Branagh's Henry V (1989) is still the best Shakespearian actor ever. No actor has spoken the language better, it just rolls off his tongue and there is no stiffness to his delivery.

Richard III (1995) comes in 2nd. Ian McKellen as the evil Richard is absolutely delicious. Plus, the ending is a laugh out loud moment that makes one rise in the theater and applaud.

Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing (1993) comes in 3rd, the whole ensemble is a joy to watch and a tanned Emma Thompson has never looked better.

Titus (1999) with Anthony Hopkins was a total snooze fest.

Zeffirelli's version is a brilliant classic. However I *slightly* prefer Luhrmann's version because of the captivating mixture of original dialogue and the modern environment. It's just a beautifully unique version of a classic story. Believe me, I'm not one to happily admit to liking a Leonardo DiCaprio and/or John Leguizamo movie. I get points for honesty, correct? Please proceed with your rant now.

Unfortunately, my generation 1 iPad without any updates has no ability to cut and paste, so I can't participate in these games and polls. I just wondered if you had forgotten about that movie. Not having seen it, I can say exactly nada about its merits or lack thereof.

Understandable. Rant withdrawn. And because of that, you may now receive your MLT :)

Cavardossi,

If you wish to play, I would be happy to include your votes in my daily posting. Also, assuming Muppets is okay with that plan.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 9, 2013 12:19:24 PM PST
I'm Muppets, and Muppets, along with his alter-ego Hawkeye Pierce, is most definitely okay with that plan.
