I only suggested the possibility of a discussion; I was not suggesting that I decide the rules. How did you read that into it?

There are an infinite number of ways to handle it, and I'm not going to suggest that there is only one way to do it before anyone else opens their mouth. I play games with rulebooks that really are rule BOOKS. I've played wargames most of my life. I'm not expecting this to be that friggin' complicated. I just don't want to be forced into shortening the game to the minimum possible time if I'm enjoying the discussion.

Someone is taking this thread so seriously as to censor my posts, as never happens in any other thread.

I never said that there was anything "wrong" with anything. When did I ever bring morality into this?

And, where did you get the idea that I was raiding your underwear drawer?

I suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 3-car auto accident, and have had chronic, intractable migraines ever since. I am taking thousands of dollars/month worth of "migraine pills," already, and they're barely effective enough to prevent me from being institutionalized. They give me side effects that ordinarily indicate that one should stop taking them; but, I must take them, anyway, since there is no alternative since I cannot afford the more effective medicine.

I already sleep as much as I can to avoid the pain, but human beings can't stay asleep all of the time.

If just "taking a migraine pill and a nap" would solve my problem, do you think I'd need YOUR suggestion?

I merely wanted to see the game last longer, and have more active participants. Once people start casting all of their votes into the same film every day, that is, effectively, the end of their participation; it also forces other participants to escalate in kind, or declare the contest over and hand victory to the despoiler of the contest.

But, Hell, I only SUGGESTED a way that things COULD be done. YOU are the one with their panties painfully twisted. I was fine.

The Girl Can't Help It ++ Note to cobat Spectre, it's only irreversible if you don't catch it early

Oh, yeah, that was mature.
So, it's nice to know other people get on the sore side of your retribution, not only me (e.g., your voting down movies you haven't seen just to spite me.)

Some people on here are taking these games WAY too seriously. . . .

__________________________________________________
And this is where the "game" gets REALLY lame-- we hold each other in a stalemate while everyone else plays. That's why I think that this kind of voting is stupid.

"She's Gotta Have It" can't win unless more people want it to win, and I doubt that they do. It won't take long for anything else to overtake you. I was just trying to level the playing field a little; but, if you are going to make the contest personal, then I just redefine victory as causing anything I prefer to your movie to win-- which, adjusting for you, makes any of them.

I'd rather talk about films... but, if we're just going to play a weak game, then, I'll make a weak game of it.

C. J. Vasta says:
Well, the Smart way to play is to continue to add to your movies total. And trim lesser titles before confronting the bigger ones. Why you're championing a lesser Edmond O'Brien movie that one only really needs to seen once is beyond me. Anymore of this nonsense from you and I'll ask epicgordan to add the Dennis Quaid version to the best remake game. Or as Fats would say "Oh Yeah!"

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 15, 2012 6:13:26 PM PDT
Isn't epicgordon the guy who cheats with all of the sock puppet accounts? And, I have no idea what you're talking about, with the Dennis Quaid stuff.

I have no idea why you think that anyone would need to see, "The Girl's Got To Have It," repeatedly. It has the dramatic weight of an Elvis flick.

Aristocrats + (feline-free since 2005)
Chelsea Girls + (needs to be revived
&/or brought into a museum with some huge Warhol follower
or someone who knew him to present it in one of the ways
it was meant to be shown).
Lebowski - (what's so bad about the name "Jeff"?)
Diaboliques - (plot details were as sloppy as the culprits)

I, for one, have seen both "D.O.A." (1949--or, again, is it 1950? No one's sure??)
& "...Girl Can't Help It" (directed by Frank Tashlin, definitely not Spike Lee)
multiple times & don't think either one is lightweight. They're both huge favorites
of mine, along with dozens of others on the list. If I was less than hugely fond
of either one, I would've been down-voting any support it/they got. I'd been tempted
to do that anyhow just to try to balance things out a little, but, as I've previously
stated, the top priority here is voting up your personal favorites &/or the ones you
feel most epitomize the "cult classic" & voting down the ones you don't feel quite make the cut &/or ones you just don't like or hate or that you feel don't even belong here.
If there were lots more voters,
it might be wise to limit each movie to one vote per person,
but there are only a few of us (which, I guess, makes US a cult).

It does seem a bit illegitimate, though, to have a couple of movies so ridiculously
far into the lead, & I still question how many other films on the list have been seen
by everyone. I still have some of these films to watch for the first time myself
(which would be easier if I wasn't mostly limited to youtube) & I acknowledge
it's quite a gargantuan task, but this game is NOT just between 2 (or even 6) films.
Yes, if a film is a favorite, you should be voting it up, but if it's so easy for you
to pick JUST ONE favorite, I have to question how much you really LOVE films.

This game (by its very topic) was designed to attract people whose film fanaticism
is pretty over-the-top, but, generally, I've found that obsessive film fans find it difficult (if not impossible) to settle on just ONE film, though they sometimes obsess over one SORT of film.

When I first began the game (on another thread with a similar title--it's buried now,
I guess, so you'll have to search for it, but I'm sure you'll know it when you see it),
I was wary about how long a list it might end up being, but I didn't want to miss
any deserving entries & I knew there would have to be some films I hadn't discovered (for whatever reasons), so I solicited suggestions, which came pouring in
& they've never entirely stopped. I wanted to be careful, though, about including
films just because they were suggested. If it wasn't already clear to me that a film
had a cult following & if it was one with which I wasn't already familiar,
I wanted to find out all I could about it.

Before I declared the original list finished (on the original thread), I was concerned
that it might end up blasting past 200. I was planning to stop at 150, but ultimately went to 160. With the choices that have been added & the ones that I've still been planning to add, I'd say we're close to 200 anyhow. There certainly hasn't been
any hesitation in voting movies off, but I wonder how much of that has been due
to wanting the new titles on the list, since I've been hesitant to add to the game
until there was a reduction in space.

I ask everyone who's been voting for one film exclusively if you've seen
even half the films on the list (I've seen about 2/3 myself) & if there are any others
you like/love as much or are intrigued enough to check out.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but in the interest of fairness
& to make it a closer, perhaps more honest & more exciting game,
please mix it up a little or I'll institute a limit of 5 up-votes
& 5 down-votes per movie per week
(this is supposed to be a game about movies
that break the rules or make up their own rules,
so why do I feel like the bad guy here??)

Q--

If "Little Shop..." was one of your favorites as a kid, I wonder if you're confusing
the non-musical 1960 version (very much a cult classic) with the musical 1986 remake (not so much).

cobaltspectre--

Sorry to hear about your medical problems. I seriously hope you can stay away
from the institutions. They're a fate worse than death, really (I should know--
they've locked me up more than once).

cobaltspectre: >"And, I have no idea what you're talking about, with the Dennis Quaid stuff."<

I think he meant Tom Cruise's "version" of 'The Hustler', which wasn't a remake, but a sequel.
Even epicnutjob realized that mistake.

For what it be worth, I think 'D. O. A.' (the original) is a pretty darn good film. I don't question it's historical "cult status"... but I question whether it is STILL a cult film.
I'd say the same thing about 'The Girl Can't Help It'.

I think both are pretty universally admired today. There rep has grown to general approval, rather than just cult appeal.

I could be wrong. And I admit that 'Eyes without a Face' (which I've voted up a number of times) certainly belongs in this category of the 'near-universally praised' today.

Again, there's a reason for calling the game
"Greatest Cult Classic Of All Time".

The new status quo:

D.O.A. (++)

G.C.H.I. (--)

I agree that D.O A. is actually a film noir classic; although Vasts would, apparently, disagree.

P.S. JPB (and anyone who trusts my judgment): I was even including "The President's Analyst" among my "Top 5 Political Movies" in the Politics forum. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Even the Barry McGuire song ("Inner Manipulations") is one I like. The medley that accompanies the montage is kind of dated and annoying; but, other than that, I love it.

"G.C.H.I."

Is that the English translation of that Polish movie called "God Chides Hitler Infinitely" ?

Nah, not entirely sure. It's just been my experience that these two films were universally praised and popular. 'Run Lola Run' was the height of cool at release, making it's mark not only because it Was cool, but because it was German (and Franka Potente helped A LOT). You know, the foreign film that breaks through the language barrier and gets world-wide praise, like 'Crouching Tiger...' and 'Amelie'. Run Lola Run was basically that years Amelie (even though Amelie went a little further with noms and stuff). 'Secretary' likewise on the popularity front. Big film, widely known, seen and liked. I guess it's a likelier cult film than 'Run Lola Run' because of the subject and it's subject appealing to not only a wide audience but a select audience also. Over time I can see the possible cult, but this won't diminish the films popularity.

This brings into question more films on the list (including films I have voted for) like 'Being John Malkovich', 'Donnie Darko', 'Monty Python Grail', 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Big Lebowski'. All these films are extremely well known. All are Mostly well liked. Yet each have a group of devoted fans whose devotion exceeds the norm.

I guess the question is - is a devoted fanbase, that separates itself by devotion from the average fan, Enough to earn a film cult status?

The Dark Backward(directed by Adam Rifkin)

Dirtier than a mangy dog; a trash filled hell filled with apathetic souls and opportunists who prey on the few remaining innocents who dare to put themselves on the line. Chief opportunist here is Bill Paxton's Gus, an accordion playing garbage collector whose depravity knows no bounds. Eating out of trash cans is just part of the joys of life for Gus. Doesn't mind stumbling upon a dead body or two. If it moves, he'll likely sleep with it. If it can benefit him in any way, he will grasp the good fortune at any costs. Opportunity arrives in the shape of best mate Marty Malt, a wannabe stand up comedian who leans on Gus for support. Played by Judd Nelson, the skinny sweating Marty is perhaps the last heart-of-gold left in this trash filled dystopia. But heart-of-gold ain't funny, so when chance arrives in the shape of physical mutation, Marty and Gus see the neon lights of fame and fortune glowing within reach.

Paxton drives this film with his over-the-top/on-the-edge performance. Paxton Unleashes himself in this show. Judd Nelson, frankly, has never been better. Skinny, hunched forward, quietly spoken and sweating bucket's, Nelsons's Marty is the lead yet a perfect foil for Paxton tour de crazee. Wayne Newton is also at his best as a talent agent who sees cash in deformity. James Caan takes best small character honors, delivering straight up arrogance and immorality as the "Doctor" who couldn't give a BLANK about his patients. Rob Lowe gets a brief, but fitting role as a talent scout, and Lara Flynn Boyle is subdued as the apathetic girlfriend.

True cult stuff on the platter. Enough depravity to turn off the average punter. Good enough to deserve fans and earn fans. I am now a fan.
