Wait... let's back up here.

Q says: "Which makes him my hero."

You did not like Secretary because she gets abused by her boss but you like a guy that would put her head in the fridge?

Q says:
Architect says: "You did not like Secretary because she gets abused by her boss but you like a guy that would put her head in the fridge?"

Yes and no.

Secretary, to me, feels like a degradation to women. Yes, she may have liked it. But it made me feel bleh. Also, it drags on and on and on. American Psycho is more anti-yuppie-man than misogynistic.

Note: Patrick didn't put his secretary's head in the fridge! That was just a model! He told Chloe to leave so he wouldn't hurt her! :)

Bale and Gyllenhaal's characters are both victims of mental illness mixed with emotional isolation and general unrest with society.

American Psycho is arguably merely a satire of the social climate of the '80s (or modern society in general): materialism, consumerism, hedonism, narcissism, conformity, a quest for "self-esteem'...all masking social anxiety, fear, and unhappiness. I'm not down with the animal abuse, but that's more explicit in the book than the film.

Secretary just irks me a little. People who are "cutters" usually have deep-seated emotional traumas (Lee Holloway's is never really explained, but has something to do with a damaging childhood).

This topic probably hits a nerve for me due to personal history (I was with someone with similar issues), probably a little TMI, but that likely explains why I don't like it, and don't think it's a topic to make light of.

Overall, I think American Psycho (the film) was done more more tastefully than Secretary. The latter often seems a little too much "exploitation film", and a little too little substance. Not to mention, it's dreadfully over-acted.

Architect,
I finally finished Deceiver this weekend. Tim Roth gave a fantastic performance. Thanks again for the recommendation.

C. J. Vasta says:
From the Q Continuum:American Psycho is arguably merely a satire of the social climate of the '80s (or modern society in general): materialism, consumerism, hedonism, narcissism, conformity, a quest for "self-esteem'...all masking social anxiety, fear, and unhappiness. I'm not down with the animal abuse, but that's more explicit in the book than the film.

How is that different than the social climate of the 1970s. I mean they called the "Me" decade for a reason, are are psychopaths really great social critics?
