Killer Klowns From Outer Space --

@CD Mort ~ What movie did you originally think it was?

In reply to an earlier post on May 10, 2012 6:22:36 PM PDT
Q,
Yeah, I prefer 'Up In Smoke' to 'HalfBaked', and most "stoner" flicks. I probably like 'Friday' more than the Cheech and Chong, but I'm just not sure about how "cult" it is. Not saying it isn't cult, just saying I'm not convinced it is.

The scene near the start when Cheech meets Chong for the first time is one of my favorite scenes ever. The giant spliff, Cheech freaking out, the cop bit, and then all the way to the courthouse with the "It's BLANKING Vodka, Man!" line. I love it. This 20 minutes is THE ultimate in stoner flick scenes.

I'll admit that I suffer nostalgic love. So many of my favorite films are attached to my favorite times or places. That is why, even though I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed many of the fillms on this game for the first time only recently, I am Still mainly voting for my long time favorites. It's hard for films that I have only recently seen to compete with the one's that have been my favorites for years and years. 'Up In Smoke' is one of these long-time favorites.

"This ish is so bad, it'll put a hump on a camel's back."

CC,

Why don't you like 'Eat My Dust!'?

In reply to an earlier post on May 10, 2012 7:43:59 PM PDT
Q says:
KK,

I'm the same way with 'Friday,' 'Dazed and Confused,' and 'Set It Off' (the latter being my favorite since age 14...I watched it almost every day after school in grades 11-12).

So, yeah, nostalgia is one of the greatest things about movies. Other movies will come along that are obviously much better films, but they can never replace that feeling of familiarity and elation that you get remembering the good times of yesterday.

On that note, I just got a bunch of films from the library and don't know which one to watch tonight!!!

I'm gonna vote afterwards (in case i love or hate it).

In reply to an earlier post on May 10, 2012 7:54:55 PM PDT
Q,
Nostalgia is great, isn't it. It's a big reason why I like Terrence Hill flicks. I used to sit with the old man and watch 'em on Saturday afternoons (after playing a game of cricket or footy and a lunch comprised of pies and pasties). Whenever I watch one, I can almost *taste* those weekends of yesteryear. I love it. Good to know I'm not alone.

Enjoy the flicks! Myself, I was reading the 'Jason Vorhees/Friday the 13th' thread, and went out and hired the lot. So this weekend, it's blood and guts time. I'll likely regret sitting through so much average movie-making by the end of the weekend, but at least I'll have been refreshed on a variety of ways to kill people (now if only I could find a way to invite some of the forumites over to my place, the education will be all worth while).

;)

My old man and I used to watch 'Crocodile Dundee'...ha!

I didn't know Jason and Freddy had a thread! I have the entire oeuvre of Nightmare/Friday movies. Much love for them.

Although, nothing beats Sleepaway Camp.

President's Analyst ++
Warriors ---

I think that comparing The President's Analyst to Barbarella may well be the first genuinely stupid thing that I've ever seen come from JPB's brain. I like The President's Analyst BECAUSE it takes you back to a different period in American history, (how in Hell does Barbarella do that?) and presents a kind of time capsule from a time I barely experienced, since I was about 5 when it came out. It does it, moreover, by showing it through the perspective of satirical writers whom I consider fairly funny. I'm sorry that it's not as "sophisticated" as street gangs with their own wardrobe designers and makeup artists, but I don't actually see what I carry away from that, at ALL.

>"I think that comparing The President's Analyst to Barbarella may well be the first genuinely stupid thing that I've ever seen come from JPB's brain."<

Cobalt, I only compared them for being similarly dated, not holding up to scrutiny today. I didn't compare them based on content, obviously.

So now you're spite down-voting 'The Warriors' because of that? Pffft.

What happened to Barbarella? Did someone vote it off? I was just about to watch it, and now it's gone.

I'm currently watching 'They Live,' and I like it so far, so I'm gonna go ahead and vote.

Actually, I could vote against ANYTHING that I don't consider THE best, since no one said anything about this being a "10 best" contest.

You made mention of the fact that you didn't believe that The President's Analyst deserved to have numbers that high based on how good a movie that you think it is.

I think that Battle Royale is EASILY twice or thrice the movie Warriors is, as far as that genre is concerned, so if it's a matter of a film having votes that are conspicuously out of balance with its merits, I cast my vote on that basis. You may call it, "spite voting," if you like; but, if you define spite that way, I suspect that your vote against The President's Analyst had a spiteful tone in the first place. You weren't voting against it because it was so bad; you were voting against it because you didn't believe that it deserved to be so high in the rankings. I suspect that there are other films on the list that, if you were being objective, you would admit were inferior films.

If voting against a film because we believe that its ranking is inappropriate, rather than whether we actually like or dislike it more or less than other films on the list has now become the standard of play, you can hardly accuse me of "spite voting" a film I honestly believe bequeaths absolutely nothing to society, and is not even the standout film in its own genre.

P.S. One thing that I've always loved about films was how they could transport me back to earlier times to see what kind of tastes people had, what style of slang was in fashion, what subjects were ripe for lampooning, etc. I've never considered criticizing any film from any era for being, "dated," except if, in that era, they were given to filming historical epics with contemporary hairstyles. The notion of criticizing the President's Analyst because it is dated makes as much sense as saying that Dr. Strangelove is "dated" because the Cold War is over, we use missiles, not B-52's, etc. Then again, I don't know what JPB may have to say about Strangelove if it ever comes right down to it.

White Heat fairly prominently shows what must have been, at the time, awesome new crime-fighting technology. Today, it looks, "dated," as Hell. But, I'm glad that I got to see what was considered "cutting edge" police technology in 1949. That may bore some people, I guess. But, I like it.

Batttle Royale ---
The Girl Can' Hep It. + +

Oh, and here's Vasta, KING of the spite voters, who undoubtedly never saw Battle Royale once in his life.

Just trying to lighten the mood.

The Girl Can' Hep It --- a major building block for The Beatles.
Batttle Royale --- a major building block for Kill Bill?

C. J. Vasta says:
Structurally, "The Girl Can't Help It!" has very little in common with the Elvis movies. "The Girl Can't Help It!" is essentially a showcase musical highlighting different bands from that era. There are number of movies like this in the 50s and 60s. What puts "The Girl Can't Help It" ahead of the pack is the libretto portion of the movie is a witty comedy filled with great performances by Edmond O'Brien, Tom Ewell, and Henry Jones. There's also a truly eclectic mix of music here with Abby Lincoln, Little Richard, The Platters and to cater to an older audience in a music video worthy version of Cry Me a River. The song that played a role in the formation of the Beatles was the Thirty Flight Rock sung by Eddie Cochran. It's a song about how a guy's girlfriend lives of the 30th floor of a skyscraper with the elevator broken down, and how by the time he climbs all this steps, he's way too tired to make out with her. It's a fairly lyrically intense song as it goes into a great detail about the effort of climbing of all these steps. It was the song that Paul McCartney chose to demonstrate to John Lennon and his and that he had what it took.

The Elvis movie by a contrast is essentially is essentially a one-man musical with Elvis having all the Musical Numbers, exceptions were Viva Las Vegas and Speedway where Ann-Margaret and Nancy Sinatra got to sing respectively.

One thing I discovered when I was doing a post on which if any Elvis movies deserved cult status is that a lot of Elvis movies are fairly old fashioned in their plot structure and resemble a movie that was more popular 20 years earlier than the films that were contemporary with it in the 60s. This is no doubt Colonel Tom Parker's influence.

I suppose this is what make's Top Secret! such a deft parody of the Elvis movie given that is also parody of WWII movies. (Allegedly the vilians are East German Commnunists but it's pretty obvious they're Nazis."
