SEE END OF THIS POST FOR FINAL RESULTS

For the past week, people have been nominating Best Picture (or its equivalents) Oscar winner as the worst choice for Best Picture that year.

This yielded a list of 21 films that recieved 11 or more nominations. Now we are going to pare down the list to ten least deserving films and this will create the Bottom Ten list.

Now remember we are trying to make a list of least deserving films. Therefore, first choose a film that you feel was just a bad film. If no film qualifies under this criteria, then choose to advance the film of least artistic quality. Add on to the score of this film (+1)

Next, choose the one film you feel does not deserve to be on the list or the best of the worst! Subtract one from the score of this film (-1).

Once we get down to 10 films, we will continue the process but as each one falls off, it will be placed in order of fall of on the 10 Worst Best Picture Choices list.

So here are the overall rules.

1. Vote once a day.

2. Copy the previous persons post and note who you followed.

3. Add one point to the film you feel is the Worst of the Worst and subtract one point to the film you feel is least deserving to be on the list.

4. Note the film you add one to and the film you minused one from. (If the film goes to zero remove)

5. If you want you can elaborate on your choices but this is not required.

I was debating on whether to weight the films based on the nominating process but since some of the films were in light groups they received more nominations than a film in a packed group. So therefore, I am starting all films with 5 points (which seems to be the norm).

So here are the finalists!

The bottom 21 are:

1928/29 (2nd) - The Broadway Melody (5)
1932/33 (6th) - Cavalcade (5)
1938 (11th) - You Can't Take It with You (5)
1943 (16th) - Casablanca (5)
1944 (17th) - Going My Way (5)
1952 (25th) - The Greatest Show on Earth (5)

Plus Crash - This actually is on my list of all time worst films period.
Minus Chicago - The musical it is based on is one of my favorites (the orignal with Jerry Orbach, Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera and not the current revival.) and I feel it was successful.

Gosh, I feel like a kid in a candy store. So many dreadful films. So few votes.

To start, I think:

Amadeus +1--it stands out even in this crowd, even against Platoon, The Last Emperor, The English Patient, and Crash, as an outstanding exercise in pretentious twaddle.
Casablanca -1: Arguably the most quotable screenplay ever, and that's more than enough to immortalize it for me.

+1 Slumdog Millionaire (probably not the worst of the bunch, but I can't comprehend just how badly Oscar F***ed up 2008 as a whole).

- Greatest SHow on Earth : A thouroughly entertaining film. A lot better than many of the films listed here. Plus Heston and Hutton are so mismatched by typical Hollywood standars they actually come as a fairly realistic couple.
+ Dances with Wolves: I had trouble deciding between this and Platoon. American Beauty should have definitely made the list. But let's face it, any drama that has Charlie Sheen as its main lead has enough problems. Winning!

- The Greatest SHow on Earth (Stewart's Performance alone should take it off the list.)
+ Dances with Wolves.

Incredibly, Gone with the Wind" got no negative votes. Given how much this film is bashed out there, it's shocking that Casablanca was nominated and GWTW was completely spared. It is now nominated on the best picture list. So there's still a place to vote for it. :)

Amadeus -1 (no disrespect intended on your part, William).
Greatest Show on Earth +1 (this has got to be some sort of prank, because, Jimmy Stewart or not, this film is unadulterated crap; there's no defending it).

J. Baker says:
Cilantron: >"Amadeus - It's a movie. Reality need not apply"<

It needs to apply somewhat for me to take it seriously. Why call the lead character Mozart at all if reality "need not apply"?
Why? Because Forman knew it wouldn't sell as many tickets to have it called a fantasia on the life of an unspecified composer, rather than an explicitly named 'biopic'. As such, it's a travesty.
