Welcome to the new and improved Cult Game, fellow movie cultists!

This is a thread that promotes stimulating conversation between fellow movie lovers, particularly enthusiasts of the strangely impassioned and outré in filmmaking, those looking for fair argument, or film recommendations for their home viewing edification: very little is out of bounds here!...

Each person may come to talk about their favorites, and vote once per day.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Rules:
We are allowed 3 Up-votes, and 3 Down-votes, to be used any way we choose on each post.

Please cut and past the last listed post, and tell us how you're voting (which titles are being plus'd and minus'd).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The points cast from the last thread, by the malignant trolls: Antediluvian Priestess, California Couple, Col. Douglas Mortimer, Lew Archer, and Spiritual Architect, made from June 25, 2012 to present -- are frozen -- their voting privileges are hereby disallowed on this new thread, and their harassment of fellow posters will not be allowed on here.
All other points cast are included, just as they were in the first "Greatest Cult Classic Film Of All Time Game" ...
The previously requested addition of 'Plains, Trains, and Automobiles' is included here.
Each poster is allowed to pick two (and only two) more movies to add, in the course of this game from hereon. They can be a title new to this game, or an old title brought back. They will be added at 9 points each. So pick carefully!.....
Movies I've watched because they were in this game at some point include.....
Trilogy of Terror
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
The Girl Can't Help It
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Zelig
Eyes Without a Face
Fahrenheit 451
The Dark Backward
Forbidden Zone
Parents
The President's Analyst
Waiting
Theatre of Blood
And I'm maybe missing a couple more. Watching these films has been the highlight of the cult game/thread. And I'm not done yet. There's still a whole bunch I want to see, starting with 'El Topo'. I'll let youse know what I thought of it.
Yesterday, I watched 'Freeway' again. I hadn't seen it in eons, and had forgotten most of it. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Odd little take on Red Riding Hood, littered with human trash. Flippin' awesome performance from Reese. That girl....she's been taking daring roles since day one. Gotta respect her for that. I've always liked her, but after seeing this again (and appreciating it more than the last time i saw it), my respect for her has skyrocketed. I can say, without a doubt, that she is one of my favorite actresses.
Jonathan, before I go and screw up the game, I'm very tired and want to make sure I have the rules correct. I can add two more movies to this current list and those will be the only two I can add, correct?
Last edited by the author on Jul 3, 2012 1:55:01 AM PDT
Yes, Alice, and you can add them any time within the course of the game (which might go on for another couple Months!)
If you want to add one now, and one later, you can of course do that.
And a reminder: we're doing +3 / -3 voting here.
You could split the Up or Down votes, or use them all against two titles if you feel strongly about it!!
Posted on Jul 3, 2012 2:02:21 AM PDT
Okay, I am going to hope I read those rules correctly, and if not, you can happily remove the two films I am adding back in (and also correcting the name because it is driving me crazy and I make corrections for a living, to Planes, Trains and Automobiles):
Ya know, I was thinking, when I use my 2 picks for adds, that I might just pick another Coen film! And the one that stuck out most as culty to me is 'The Hudsucker Proxy'. In that, Norvelle meets, at a business party, the Finnish head of "a radical splinter group of disgruntled investors"... I considered subtitling this thread "the radical splinter group of disgruntled cultists"... then I realized most of you are not so disgruntled as I am! And you're hardly inclined to deck a Norvelle Barnes in the mug for speaking bad Finnish either!
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 2:09:10 AM PDT
Cewl, Alice, but one questione: which one is "+ Those aren't pillows!"?
I'm really tired and with head cold now, so I am a bit too bleary eyed to figure it out.
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 2:33:49 AM PDT
Jonathan: Those aren't pillows! -- Planes, Trains and Automobiles, when John Candy and Steve Martin shared a bed in the cheap motel.
Also Hudsucker Proxy definitely had it's moments, quirky little film.
Hope you feel better, I really need to get to sleep, it's nearly 2:30 a.m., so maybe just a few hours sleep tonight.
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 2:39:02 AM PDT
Ohhh, ohh! Ah, right, of course. Well, I just proved what movie I need to refresh my memory on!
Adding that to my to-re-see list for early July.
Posted on Jul 3, 2012 4:04:16 AM PDT
Lots to ponder. Firstly, the two additions. I'm throwing around a few titles, some extremely cult, some knife-edge.
Ghosts...of the Civil Dead
The Cable Guy
Trancers
Tremors
Highlander
Juice
Meet the Feebles
I'm liking Tremors. Not a big box-office hit by any standard, yet grew a cult around its video release, certainly enough of a cult to spawn the sequels.
Juice, certain cult within the hip-hop community. Pretty much loved within that community, but largely unseen outside.
I don't need convincing that 'Juice' is cult, but I'm still not *absolutely* sure about 'Tremors'. My only doubt lies in it being too popular NOW. It fits every other category though.
Also to consider is my ten faves from the list. if possible, even narrow that down to my 5 faves. That's where it gets real tough. This is a great list of films, and all are so varied in style and substance, that comparing, or numbering is hard. I guess an unofficial top 10, in no order, is, 'The Warriors', 'The Gods Must Be Crazy', 'Bad Taste', 'Raising Arizona', 'Assault on Precinct 13', 'Withnail & I', 'The Big Lebowski', 'Faster, Pussycat...', 'Fahrenheit 451', and probably 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'. Throw 'Tremors' and 'Juice' into the mix and it all gets knocked around.
Decisions, decisions.
Jon, I'm confused on one thing. So, the above mentioned posters had all of their votes since June 25th cancelled?
Alice, I believe Trainspotting was on the list, and I was the only one championing it (or I may be thinking of Requiem for a Dream).
Sloan, I l-o-v-e-d Tremors when I was a wee girl. I definitely second the motion of Juice. Cable Guy, meh... I don't think I've seen the others.
P.S. - What happened to Prez Analyst?
P.P.S. - For anyone who cares, I have finally decided on the name for my kitty (formerly called Don Juan)....Patrick!!!
Q,
>"P.S. - What happened to Prez Analyst?"<
It was a casualty of the rolled back voting on the 5 verboten players, who's votes since June 25th don't count for this game anymore. They can battle it out by themselves, like they do on the Spielberg thread.
>>"Patrick!!!"<<
....I'm honored? But I sense it's more of a Bateman thing than a Baker thing.
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 5:50:25 AM PDT
TS,
'Trancers' and 'Meet the Feebles', definitely cult. 'Tremors' has been played so many times on TV in the States, I think it's a very large cult indeed. And I believe it's the number one film of all time in Estonia. I have nothing to base that on but a *sense*...
From everything I've heard about it, 'Ghosts...of the Civil Dead' would seem to apply as cult. 'Juice' is a tight, specific cult.
I'll take your word for it on 'Cable Guy', but I've never heard of anyone who really *loved* it.
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 6:01:08 AM PDT
Quexos,
I see 'Clue' and 'Orca' as fine selections for the game. I'm convinced they're both cult, and that I know some people really love them.
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 6:07:12 AM PDT
JB,
I'm thinking maybe 'Tremors' seems more cult for me due to that darn Ozperspective! Man I do love that film.
I gotta admit too that I'm the only person I "know" who *loves* 'The Cable Guy'. It's the one big Jim Carrey fix I have. I swear it's underrated and that I am the only sane person alive (as evidenced by my solo cult for this film).
Let me crunch the numbers on 'Tremors' tomorrow. I'll try to build a case for inclusion. But right now, I gotta go to bed! So while I say good morning to my fellow cultists, you can say goodnight!
In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2012 6:18:05 AM PDT
Naw, I've heard some real highbrow, longhair critics who defended 'Cable Guy''s honor... high-flown names in my Country like Jonathan Rosenbaum, Dave Kehr.... really hard hitters on the East Coast Film Critic Intelligentsia.
I liked 'Tropic Thunder' better, but no one's calling that a cult film!
Sloany, Tremors, loved that movie...watched that so many times with my family. I always thought cult status was gained via word of mouth, which made these films popular on video, rather than in theaters. Tremors had a following years after it was at the movies, so I think it still qualifies as cult, and it is certainly dripping with cheese.
Good mini-list there, a few there I have not seen. Trancers was another good one. But...there can be only one! (or two, in this case -- still, Highlander rules).
