Have you tried to download the song after an playback error? This could be a solution to your question.

Well... given the age of the original post and how few people have actually found there way here, I'm not holding out much hope. But for what it's worth, I have the exact same symptoms. Older Amazon MP3s play fine in Media Player in Windows 7 (32 bit), but none of the new MP3s play. I don't hold out much hope because I'm pretty sure this is the Amazon development team's way of hocking their own "player", their competition for iTunes. I suspect if you try that program, it will play your MP3s flawlessly. Shows how clueless they are, I shop MP3s from Amazon because I DON'T want to install an iTunes type program. I am a software developer by trade, so I know how arrogant we can be.

For what it's worth, I "solved" their problem for them. I used MP3TAG, and discovered that they've embedded the album art into the MP3 header. While it is true that this should be supported by the ID3 standard, it doesn't change the fact that people creating the MP3s should still be testing their work with the major players to ensure they support it. In the case of Media Player 12 on Windows 7 32 bit, it doesn't, or at least, not the way Amazon is doing it.

To fix, I was able to remove the image from the tag and click Save (using MP3TAG; see previous post for location), and now the song, without any recoding or bitrate changes, plays great. I then re-added the image back, using MP3Tag again, and... it still plays great. So it seems like whatever is jacked up in the tag gets enough bytes re-organized when you drop the image and/or re-add it that whatever funkiness they are leaving gets overwritten in the correct format. Definitely a tag problem on Amazon's part.

I'm not sure who was talking about DRM on an earlier post, but MP3s don't support any kind of DRM, so it ain't that. It's just sloppy, untested work in writing the ID3 tags.

One closing thought, though, for Amazon folks, if they bother keeping up with these threads.

The *very* few people you see complaining about it here... are nothing compared to the people who bought 1 MP3 file from you, it wouldn't play, so they installed iTunes. However your developers have tried to spin this so that it makes sense... it doesn't.

The average user won't be nearly so diligent as the people you see on this thread. The average user will say "<choice expletive> it! it's only a dollar", and move on. Where's the executive in charge of sales when you need 'em?!?

If anyone is following this thread you might want to also refer to the one called "mp3 wont play in Windows Media Player":
