R Hart says:
Are there some singers in groups or solo who make you want to cover your ears, maybe even if you like the music?

For me:
Dennis de Young of Styx, even though I really like Styx
Geddy Lee of Rush. I like Rush too
Steve Perry of Journey. Too grating
Jon Anderson of Yes. Its funny, I like Yes too but his voice gets annoying
Kate Bush.... of Kate Bush. Need more be said?
Bono from U2. His arrogance kind of negatively inflects his tone, although the band made good music in their prime
Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond on pure principle.

Anybody have any particularly distasteful performers in mind?

Roger Chapman. But his cringe-worthiness is actually what made him so great.

I don't recall Kate Bush, Barry Manilow or Neil Diamond ever being lead singers. If anything, they were always solo artists.

We seem to address this issue a lot on the Music, Rock, and Classic Rock forums. Can't we talk about musicians we like for a change?

Re Lucky Sevens comment: They were indeed "lead singers." Even if going under a solo name, almost all singers have a backup band. For example, Linda Ronstadt went under her solo name while a lead singer with a backup band called the Eagles.

Geddy Lee of Rush and Ian Gillan of Deep Purple are the first two that came to my mind. I can't stand either, and as a result can't listen to those bands in spite of the talented musicianship.

I'm glad no-one has mentioned Neil Young yet, he always seems to be brought up in threads like these but I think he has one of the best voices in all of rock.

Perish the thought of mentioning Neil Young in this topic. I also think he has one of the great voices in rock, a true favorite and I have almost all of his albums from Buffalo Springfield to CSNY and solo. At least until the 80's, where he released more albums than even a fan can comprehend. :)

@Stephen McNary: LOL! Well I've noticed from your posts that our tastes are pretty different for the most part--but you should know, I always enjoy reading your posts and hearing what you have to say. And sometimes our tastes collide in ways I don't initially expect.

Geddy Lee - the only reason I can't listen to Rush. I'd probably love them otherwise.
Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse - I wanna punch things when I hear him
Gwen Stefani - that little girl squeak doesn't work for me
Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips - add some stupid lyrics about vaseline and ..(see Isaac Brock)

Dennis DeYoung
Geddy Lee
Steve Walsh
Steve Perry
Brad Delp
Kevin Cronin
Mike Reno
Jon Anderson
Ann Wilson (her Robert Plant fetish is WAY too obvious)
Lou Gramm
Almost all heavy metal singers, with the exceptions of Lemmy, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson (who always sound/sounded like they live(d))
Can't include rap/hip-hop singers 'cause they're not really singing (otherwise, they would DEFINITELY be included)

Michael Topper-I enjoy reading many posters even though we disagree on a lot of things. How boring it would be if we all agreed on everything.
