While no question can be cast on the Archies' Sugar Sugar being the finest song of that benighted decade the 1960s--to this day every bass player avidly studies the revolutionary bassline Reggie (THE Reg to his many fans) laid down, and the close harmonic lines he and Archie managed to create are only equalled by the intuitive interplay of their bass and guitar. While some question Jughead's drums, it is beyond question that he lays a solid beat--and both Veronica and Betty set the gold standard for feminine sexuality that would be followed by such pale imitators as Madonna and Lady Gaga. In fact, it is commonly said that that after the Archies, MUSIC would never be the same again! Sure, Wilson Pickett, Bob Marley and the Wailers and Ike and Tina Turner all did their turns on this great song and were estimable in their way--but nobody--nobody--can match the insouicient sexiness of the original.
So my question is--Is this the greatest song of all time or does Schubert's Ave Marie top it???
