Velvet Underground/Lou Reed: Sweet Jane
Aerosmith: Mama Kin
Neil Young: Hey Hey, My My
White Stripes: Seven Nation Army
Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit
Slayer: War Ensemble or maybe Angel of Death

I would probably have nominated something by Led Zeppelin too, but can't play my old LPs. There must be something by the Rolling Stones, but I'm sure other people will nominate them.

List subject to change and expansion.

D. Mok says:
For individual riffs there are higher entries on my list, but Metallica's "Fade to Black" wins overall because of how *many* great riffs are in this one song. The acoustic intro, the acoustic verse riff, the chorus, the descending bridge and the outro are all killer.

i'm sorry, Strong, but i disagree with your post on Gimme Shelter. it pales in comparison to Keith's opening riffs on "Can't You Hear Me Knockin"!

D. Mok says:
"Gimme Shelter" is pretty damn good. Not so much because it's sophisticated, but because it somehow gives that sense of dread ("spook" as David Briggs would call it) that instantly creates a vibe of doom.
