Of those mentioned, The Clash had the biggest impact on my life. So they get my vote as the greatest. Rouding out the Top Five would be The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Rockpile, and The Beatles.

To those not yet mentioned, I'll add these 10:

The Zombies
The Searchers
The Specials
The Records
Ian Dury & the Blockheads
Steel Pulse

Jim, I love Madness (have been a fan since 1979. Zany, mad, fun. They are great. My favourite song is The Return Of The Los Palmas Seven.

Kacee, Do you have Madness' Liberty of Norton Folgate album from 2009? Outstanding though not necessarily zany.

S. Stalcup says:
Maybe a few more?

The Shadows (with or without Dame Cliff)
Manic Street Preachers
Human League (Bald or floppy hairstyle, either way, Phil Oakey is the luckiest sod on the planet to have spent the last thirty odd years with Jo on one end and Suze on the other. Brilliant synth pop besides).
The La's (even if Lee Mavers is a nutter, full stop.)
