(A couple years later)

Jimmy Smith will always be the king and grandfather of modern organ playing but Larry Young took the jazz organ to it's next logical step. UNITY was a break-through album and one that should grace the shelves of all serious Jazzers. Larry Young died from untreated pneumonia at the age of 37.

stevign,

Time sure does fly when you're having fun, they say. We missed you but it was well worth the wait, I like both "If" and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", great title.. Thank you. :-)

If I had a young teenage daughter I would turn her on to Zee Avi. With all the girl singers out there deperately trying to warbling notes up & down, Zee Avi is refreshingly different with her playfulness and sometimes Billy Holiday phrasing.

re: Chaka Khan

I would love to hear her do more jazz vocals Have you heard this classic she did for the movie "Waiting To Exhale"?

AP. I love Chaka's "Through the Fire" I'm sure you know it. Great song. I'm listeinging to Lawrence and one of em is singing Love's been good to me" Frank did that, and Rod McKuen wrote that in late 60's.. Great song..

stevign,

re: Zee Avi

She reminds me of someone else but I can't remember right now. I can hear the Billy Holiday phrasing but she bored me after awhile and I don't normally say that. Perhaps, it's because I'm in such an upbeat mood and I found her to be a downer. That's not to say she isn't talented, she just didn't appeal to me. Thank you anyway.

Yes, I do know it.

re: Love's been good to me"

Did you know that Johnny Cash did it too? He sang it on his TV show in 1970, I just found this out.

George,

I love anything and everything by her. Her and Rufus were before your time but are you familiar with her group before she went solo?

Fortunately for me my mom doesn't. My intention was really to post Zee Avi for the parents here (I'm sure there are some), personally her stuff is too young for me as well and I wouldn't actually buy any of her CDs but I can see a parent trying to slip this to their kids inbetween the American Idol or Rap crap they're probably listening to.

Cheyl Lynn , Patti Labelle , Luthor Vandross are more good singers. R.I.P Luthor.

Then I will delete my post so as not to stand in the way of your altruistic intentions. Absolutely I would want my teenage daughter to listen to her, if I had one. :-)
