Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett over the Collins years. It isn't even close for me...

Phil was a better drummer than Peter.

LOL Anthony! Actually, I think Peter did play some drums in one of his earlier bands (not Genesis, of course) ... but I'm sure Phil blows him away.

Just listened to a little bit of Marscape this morning (a Brand X-related project), and Phil's just a madman on it.

Peter's the better flautist!

Gabriel hands down. I think those who choose Phil are listeners who got into them later and then went backwards into their catalog. There was something magical about those early albums that had something to do with time and what music was like in general in the early seventies.

Yeah, suzy ... I love both the Gabriel and Collins eras, but you make a good point: What's the criteria? For me, it's the drums .. which puts everything up to "Duke" into one category ... and then everything after that in another. Sure, it's easy to break it down further -- but when you use The Drums as a primary criteria, I think my categories work.

Of course, there will be those who disagree ...

It isn't the drums but 1980's Genesis is my favorite. I have heard "Selling England By The Pound" and I enjoy "Abacab" more and one may tend to dance the later music.

1970 - 77 Genesis is my favorite band of all time, "A Trick Of The Tail" is my favorite album and "Dance On A Volcano" is my favorite song. Here's why:

I'm a music junkie, first and foremost. Different chord progressions and unusual meters really grab my attention. Lyrics are secondary. If the MUSIC is aurally stimulating to me, THEN I'll pay attention to the lyrics. The first Genesis song I heard on the radio was "Dance" and it knocked me out (I was 11 at the time). It had cool chord changes and 7/8 meter - so different from "Love Will Keep Us Together!" My father was a professional jazz trumpet player - maybe that's why it was music first for me, I don't know. Anyway (no pun intended, "Lamb" fans), after hearing "Dance," I delved into the Genesis back catalog. I heard "Supper's Ready" and was stunned! That's when Genesis became my favorite band and still is. For me, it's all about Hackett and the Hackett years. I own almost all of Hackett's solo material.

Nowadays, I listen to everything and usually find something interesting, no matter what the genre (I enjoy "Suit And Tie" and "I Kissed A Girl [And I Liked It]!). However, the MUSIC is my first love and Genesis will remain my favorite band. That's just my opinion and I know some people will disagree with me, but that's okay. I'm a music teacher and would never get in the way of anyone's musical enjoyment.

RE: Which Genesis was better in your opinion, the one with Peter or the one with Phil

How about the one with both? My favorite drummer and singer of all time

Wasn't in on this thread before someone bumped it up, but a couple of observations after skimming through:

I agree that there wasn't a major shift until Hackett left (maybe a minor one with Wind and Wuthering, as Phil took more control)

Banks deserves way more credit than Peter or Phil for the music writing
