Lee Dorman, bassist for Iron Butterfly, died on Dec. 21st at 70.

He'd had heart problems and was on a list for a Heart Transplant but sadly died before it could happen.

Iron Butterfly were pioneers of "psychedelic rock" & may be considered by many to be a "one-hit-wonder" but that One Hit, "In-A-Gadda_Da_Vida", was one of the most iconic songs of the 60s!

Here are links to 3 of their other songs that feature Lee's distinctive bass style:

I met Lee briefly once after a concert in 1969. He was very friendly and cordial.

RIP Lee

He was also the bassist for Captain Beyond.

Odd thing is that a few months ago, I played Captain Beyond's legendary first album,
Then the next day heard that guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt had passed away.
I played the album again the other day, for the first time since I heard about Rhino.
Then I learned Lee Dorman's gone.

For the sake of vocalist Rod Evans and drummer/lyricist Bobby Caldwell, I promise
not to play "Captain Beyond" for a while, even though it's an all-time favorite!

Iron Butterfly's "Ball" was my introduction to the Psychedelic-Hard-Metal side of rock in 1969. I feel sadness when members of bands that changed my life pass on.

Lee Dorman will be missed. He was a founding member of two
great bands, Iron Butterfly and Captain Beyond. He did well
to have made it to seventy years. He kept playing music
right up till the end! Eric Braun, the guitarist for Butterfly,
sadly died in 2003 at the age of fifty two. That leaves only
Doug Ingle, keyboards and vocals, and Ron Bushey on drums.
The time passes so quickly but the music remains.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Lee Dorman. Iron Butterfly is one of my favorites from that era. Somehow, I never knew he was a member of Captain Beyond.

R.I.P.

The Iron Butterfly is mostly known for In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. But they had other good material as well. Heavy and Ball are both very good albums and the other side of Da-Vida has some very good songs. The classic lineup of Doug Ingle, Lee Dorman, Eric Braun and Ron Bushy was real tight. RIP Lee Dorman.

Besides "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"....."In The Time of Our Lives", "Filled With Fear", "Are You Happy", "Flowers and Beads", "Soul Experience" and "You Can't Win" come to mind as some of my favorite songs.

I own most of Iron Butterfly's albums on vinyl. I bought 3 on cd in the past couple of years.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Live

Light and Heavy/The Best of...

Good stuff Hinch. I don't think IB was among the critics faves and can't understand why. I also found them to be slightly sounding like The Doors. Perhaps it was just because of the organ. In The Time Of Our Lives was a killer track and was released as a single. It should have been top 10!

...and then there's 'My Mirage' from In-A-Gadda-Da Vida - a personal favourite. As well, 'Metamorphosis' (1970) was a strong album that came later. It was more in a hard rock vein and a worthy contender, but was unfortunately lost in the rush of great albums of the era.
