I thought I'd steal Jeff's thunder and do my own Zep/Stones matchup, however this time pinning two 'weaker' efforts from the same year as opposed to the usual rock classics.

So how about it? Which weaker (in comparison to their other work) release was less weak?

I'm all Black and Blue! :)

To my dear friend who loves Exile on Main St as much as I do...Presence...sorry about that.
Presence is my 2nd favorite Zep record!

I'm not surprised being that "Dirty Work" is high on your list as well. ;)

I give "Presence" 3.5/5, and "Black And Blue" 3.5/5. However, I go for "Black And Blue" by a small margin, although "Presence" has the best song out of both albums ("Achilles").

Being from Long Island, I have been to the "Memory Motel" on a few occassions. During that time the Stones were staying at Andy Warhol's place out in Montauk Point and there is a little bar/motel out there called Memory Motel where the Stones would go for drinks and shoot pool. "It's on the ocean" but there is no "laughter on the 22nd floor". It is only one floor.

I saw that tune played only once in about 12 Stones shows I've seen.
I saw two shows back-to-back (chickenshack) in D.C. and Memory was played at one...Moonlight Mile at the other.

Sorry about the obtuse Grateful Dead reference with "back-to-back, chickenshack"...I just couldn't resist.
Must be those good ol' U.S. Blues ;)

Did they ever play it live prior to the 2002 Forty Licks tour? I don't think so.

I have to go with "Presence" myself, if only for "Achilles Last Stand" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Oh, and I really love "Candy Store Rock" as well.

I gotta go with Presence too. imo
I'm not completely sure what this means, but Black and Blue has 24 customer reviews on it's product page,
while Presence has 257 customer reviews on it's product page. That's one hell of a difference, don't you think?

@Jeff: I'm glad *someone* else likes "Candy Store Rock". I got pummeled on the LZ review thread for liking that track!

It means that when Black and Blue was remastered for the second time a few years back, Amazon never carried the older reviews over to the new one as they so often do. The '94 reviews were way more than 24.

By the way, after thinking it over, the Bridges tour in '97 was the first time Mem. Motel was played live, I believe.

@Exile: didn't Dave Matthews join them for a live performance of "Motel" once? That version must have blown chunks.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 13, 2013 11:33:59 AM PDT
Yes, that's the one.

That makes sense Exile. I couldn't understand why there weren't more reviews for a Stones' album.
Thanks man! :)

No prob...They moved many old reviews over for the new remasters but not B&B for some reason.

Hi Michael,

Yeah, "Candy Store Rock" has always been a personal favorite. The only two tracks I don't care for as much (by Zeppelin's high standards) are "For Your Life" (just sounds kind of uninspired to me) and "Tea For One" (I much prefer Since I've Been Loving You or I'm Gonna Crawl when it comes to their elegant blues numbers).

All in all, to use your letter grade system (which I should probably start adapting instead of four stars), my ranking of the tracks off "Presence" would look something like...

Achilles Last Stand A
Candy Store Rock B+
Nobody's Fault But Mine B+
Hots On For Nowhere B-
Royal Orleans C+
Tea For One C
For Your Life C-

I don't think it's that weak, just different. Of course it isn't great either so there will, by nature, be a lot of diversity of opinion. In fact, B&B is getting a spin today. :)

@Jeff: actually, usually when I do album ratings I rate the songs on a 1-5 scale, then do an overall grade for the album. The two are pretty much equivalent, though--a 1-5 scale corresponds much better with the A/B/C/D/F grade system than a 1-4 star scale does. Although grades still offer the most luxury since you also have the "+/-" options you can add as well.

We also agree on "For Your Life". It's one of their worst songs IMO, and it was another fairly unpopular opinion on the LZ thread.

I should transfer all my old "four star ratings" to the grade system. At some point, it might be fun to filter out all the songs I ever gave an "A-" or better to. It might make for an interesting "Top 100/200 list".

I like PRESENCE more than any of the first 3 Zep albums but BLACK AND BLUE got a lot more play by me when it was new. My vote goes to B&B.
