Just like Mary Shelley, just like Frankenstein,
Clank your chains and count your change and try to walk the line.

So that's the second line. I always wondered.

M. Brewer says:
It was a junk-house in South Carolina
Held a boy the age of ten
Along with his older brother Billy
And a mother and her boyfriend
Who was a triple loser with some blue tattoos
That were given to him when he was young
And a drunk temper that was easy to lose
And thank god he didn't own a gun

and a couple of long ones which get me every time.

"The ashtray says
You were up all night
When you went to bed
With your darkest mind
Your pillow wept
And covered your eyes
And you finally slept
While the sun caught fire

You've changed

We fell in love
In the key of C
We walked along
Down by the sea
You followed me down
The neck to D
And fell again
Into the sea

You changed
Oh, you've changed

Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Something in my veins bloodier than blood
Something in my veins bloodier than blood
Something in my veins bloodier than blood
Something in my veins bloodier than blood"

"Now that you've found your paradise
This is your Kingdom to command
You can go outside and polish your car
Or sit by the fire in your Shangri-la
Here is your reward for working so hard
Gone are the lavatories in the back yard
Gone are the days when you dreamed of that car
You just want to sit in your Shangri-la

Put on your slippers and sit by the fire
You've reached your top and you just can't get any higher
You're in your place and you know where you are
In your Shangri-la
Sit back in your old rocking chair
You need not worry, you need not care
You can't go anywhere
Shangri-la, Shangri-la, Shangri-la

The little man who gets the train
Got a mortgage hanging over his head
But he's too scared to complain
'Cos he's conditioned that way
Time goes by and he pays off his debts
Got a TV set and a radio
For seven shillings a week
Shangri-la, Shangri-la, Shangri-la, Shangri-la, Shangri-la, Shangri-la

And all the houses in the street have got a name
'Cos all the houses in the street they look the same
Same chimney pots, same little cars, same window panes
The neighbors call to tell you things that you should know
They say their lines, they drink their tea, and then they go
They tell your business in another Shangri-la
The gas bills and the water rates, and payments on the car
Too scared to think about how insecure you are
Life ain't so happy in your little Shangri-la
Shangri-la, Shangri-la la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la"

Grandpa Tom says:
Artist: Chris Rea
Album: Auberge
Title: Gone Fishing

I'm gone fishing
I got me a line
Nothing I do is gonna make the difference
So I'm taking the time

And you ain't never gonna be happy
Anyhow, anyway
So I'm gone fishing
And I'm going today

I'm gone fishing
Sounds crazy I know
I know nothing about fishing
But just watch me go

And when the time has come
I will look back and see
Peace on the shoreline
That could have been me

You can waste a whole lifetime
Trying to be
What you think is expected of you
But you'll never be free

May as well go fishing......

Chris is an outstanding artist. Incredible guitarist and writer. Not widely known here in the states.

Chris Rea sells out stadiums when he tours the UK and the rest of Europe. I think he was born in the US but has lived in the UK for decades ?

Grandpa Tom says:

Yes, he's well known and loved in Europe and the UK. He's a very talented painter as well. I just looked on Wikipedia, and it states Chris was born March 4, 1951 in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. This could likely account for the fact he's not toured in the USA.

His story is pretty compelling, almost dying of Pancreatitis, and then, not only recovering, discovers new energy, creating incredible music and paintings.

I've been a casual admirer of his music for several years, (Auberge, Road To Hell, Espresso Logic). I've just recently invested in a newer 2-cd retrospective , Still so Far to Go..., and discovered his overwhelming talent on a deeper level. I've scored several of his back catalog CD's since. All exceptional.

Thank you for the reply. Hope your day's great, Howard.

"When I raise up my hand to the loving Son of Man, the Bread of Life will keep my soul alive." - Peter Green from "In The Skies"

So many nights I lay awake
Can't sleep
I lay here thinkin' 'bout a woman
I used to love
Can't sleep but no good to count sheep
I'll just count the worries
That I've got plenty of

And how many times
Must I be the fool
Before I can make it
Oh Make it on home
I've got to find a place to sing my words
Is there nobody listening to my song?

You talk about a life
Been searching for the key
But can't find an answer
To comfort me
I ask myself about love
Can't even find the door
To take me to a place
I've never seen before

But how many times
Must I be the fool
Before I can make it
Oh make it on home
I've got to find a place to sing my words
Is there nobody listening to my song? - Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac's "Before The Beginning"

From the "unschooled barbarians" in the heavy metal world come the following lines:

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

-Black Sabbath, War Pigs

Trained I see imperfection in your race
Lying in wait, blind I suffer knowing I'll never reach your heaven
It is unattainable. Please teach me how to dream
I long to be more than a machine

-Nevermore, Sentient 6

For the record, the unschooled barbarian comment was facetious. I am a metalhead through and through and I know a secret about metal music. Most of the musicians are highly skilled players and the majority of the lyrics are intelligent and poetic. The "sex, drugs and rock and roll" lyrics come from a very small sector of the metal community. Come on metalheads, back me up!
