Johnny Bee says:
If you grow tired of the friends you make
In case you mean to say something else
Say they were the best of times you ever had
The best of times with the thoughtless kind

We dress conservatively at the best of times
Prefer the shadows to the bright lights in the eyes
Of the ones we love, the bright lights in the eyes of the ones we love

What we see, what we imagine the eyes tell us nothing
The bright lights in the eyes of the one we love will tell you
Nothing except that you're the thoughtless kind

If you grow tired of the friends you make
Never ever turn your back on them
Say they were the best of times you ever had
The best of times with the thoughtless kind

(John Cale)

I've been a fan of Bruce Cockburn for more than two decades. STEALING FIRE is my favorite album. My favorite line is from "Lovers in a Dangerous Time":

"Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight."

U2 referenced it on their RATTLE AND HUM album in the song "God, Part II": "Heard a singer on the radio late last night / He says he's gonna kick the darkness Till it bleeds daylight."

think I've posted this one before. If so, sorry (not really, it bears re-posting).

"you know how it is with me baby
You know, I just can't stand myself
And it takes a whole lot of medicine
For me to pretend that I'm somebody else."
"Guilty" - Randy Newman

great lyric by Randy, but I'm most familiar with it as sung by Chris Smither.

doodah man says:
Joni Mitchell wrote "Free Man In Paris" about agent/record exec David Geffen and time that she spent there with him. I watched a bio of him on Paladia, these lyrics are just so reflective of his life in the business.

I was a free man in Paris
I felt unfettered and alive
There was nobody calling me up for favors
And no one's future to decide
You know I'd go back there tomorrow
But for the work I've taken on
Stoking the star maker machinery

R. Harris says:
@ R.L.C. - yes it is. Just curious; which version are you most familiar with, Randy's or Chris's?
Both great artists, very similar in their views. As the saying goes;
"Life is a comedy for those that think, a tragedy for those that feel." I think Randy and Chris fall somewhere about in the middle, as do I.

Randy Newman is the only one I've ever heard. I like the more sarcastic humorous songs in certain moods.

Steelers fan says:
Maybe I'll write you a letter
Maybe I'll give you a call
Maybe I'll drop you a line
When I'm feelin' better
Maybe I won't after all

Somewhere a river is flowin'
Rollin' on into the sea
Somewhere a flower is growin'
That don't mean anything to me

Let me go, let me go, let me go
Don't give me the answer
'Cause I don't want to know

Just let my heart go on beatin'
A little bit longer
I'm so young, I'm so young

Don't pick me up
You think you see me falling
I've been waiting so long to fall

Don't come to me
You think you hear me calling
Won't be me that calls

Let me go, let me go, let me go
Don't give me the answer
'Cause I don't want to know

Just let my heart go on beatin'
A little bit longer
I'm so young, I'm so young
I'm so young, I'm so young

--Randy N.
