Duran Duran's cover of Grandmaster Melle Mel's "White Lines (Don't Do It)." Dis-Honorary Mention goes to Duran Duran's cover of Public Enemy's "911 Is a Joke."

Sorry I don't know if this has been mentioned before, haven't read all 15 pages. But I just came across Billy Idol's greatest Hits (A $5 digital download, I never can find my digital download credit even with the thread about it and the links! But I have a $2 credit because amazon just told me so in an e mail!)

Anywho, Billy Idol does - "L.A.Woman". Much as I kind-a like Billy Idol, and like the Song L.A.Woman when Jim Morrison sings it - yeah, 'nuf said. It's almost - sacrilege.

Truthfully, I think cover versions are lack of creativity. Why cover a song when you can make it your own? Whitney tried, I prefer Dolly's. And I hate that when aspiring artists decide to do the song, they always go for the Whitney version- they don't realize that's not how the song was written. They should go to the original and do their own version, hopefully less unnecessary vocal gymnastics.

Don't know which was the cover...but loved Cyndy Lauper's "True Colors" and loathed Phil Collins singing it. Also add these two covers that make me cringe: "Without You" by Mariah Carey and one mentioned several times earlier, Madonna's American Pie. I picked these two because I am a big fan of both ladies but they just butchered awesome songs. That made them even worse!

Flying Lizards "Money" is awesome!

But I can understand how it might not speak to some people.

Have not read every message, so this is probably a repeat. I don't like to hate on Celine Dion, but her version or "River Deep, Mountain High" is just wrong. My favorite version is Deep Purple's.

I thought Madge's "American Pie" was actually pretty funny when I first heard it (especially when she sings "I was a lonely teenage bronc'in buck / With a pink carnation and a pick-up truck"). :D
