Kind of a morbid subject when you think about it but I just listened to a Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway song & it got me thinking. Would he be my favorite singer that's "no longer with us" (sounds a little better, huh?)? Not sure. He would definitely be up there.

So: who is YOUR favorite singer that is "no longer with us"?

I'm liking the Ray Charles if for nothing else than him singing America the Beautiful.

Being an oldie, you probably don't know most of my "departed" favorites, but one I miss every time I hear her is Karen Carpenter.

I know what is meant by 'oldies' -
Favorite female singer would have to be Patsy Cline - she had a voice that is still being heard!
Favorite male? That's harder, but not impossible. Living in the South ... it has to be ELVIS!!!

Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel. Her death was tragic.

Indeed she did. The Carpenters' music was a little too mellow for my taste but I still have 3 of their songs on my MP3 player because her voice was so amazing.

Patsy Cline

Buddy Holly. I think the whole course of rock n roll would have been different had he lived.

siliconediva--I almost put a "No Elvis Zone" but since he's not "dead" I guess it doesn't matter.

Hands down, Eva Cassidy. Look her up, especially her covers of Fields of Gold, Over The Rainbow and Ain't No Sunshine.

Her voice will break your heart and the fact that she died so young is a real tragedy.

Church Lady says:
In this day and age when so many singers become famous even though they don't know how to play an instrument or write their own music, it really makes one appreciate a true talented artist of any age, gender or muscial genre.

One singer that comes to mind is John Denver. No, he is not my favorite singer, but I recently listened to a cd of his music that someone had given me a few years ago and I have to say that I appreciate his talent much more today than I did when he was alive. Some people may think that his music was hokey, but if you take the time to listen, you will find that he had a beautiful, clear voice, and the lyrics to some of his songs were quite moving. Another very talented singer/musician who died too young and was one of my favorites - Jim Croce.

Here's a couple other oldies - way back Judy Garland and Nat King Cole, a little more recent Mama Cass Elliot and both John Lennon and George Harrison.

Maybe not a singer as much as a musician but Jimi Hendrix. I really love his music. He did sing so I guess he can count.
John Lennon is a great call, as is Nat King Cole. Love Nat.
