I think Elton John made much higher quality music than the Beatles. It was solid with excellent vocal and piano work- incorporating many styles and they couldn't compare in songwriting to his. I think his best work was "Tumbleweed Connection"- his first and only Country Rock album. The best song being "Country Comfort". He is an amazing talent.

Actually, I saw the post, in it she called him 'g*y' (don't know how far the wordfilter extends so will play it safe). It wasn't exactly the most civil response, though I can understand her frustration with this poster...

Tell ya what, E.P.: I really do like Elton's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", a BEATLES song. Lennon and Elton actually worked together several times, on the aforementioned cover and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night". Lennon also guested at one of Elton's shows at Madison Square Garden. So what does that say? Probably that they had great respect for one another's talent. And that's about as diplomatic as I'm going to get with this thread.

Anyone out there who used to watch the Uncle Floyd Show out of New Jersey? Muggsy spoofing Elton John as "Elton Outhouse" was an absolute riot.

Good on you E. P. I know that doesn't automatically mean that you think that Country Comfort is Elton's best song of all. Or you might. As for the Tumbleweed Connection, my two favourites are Love Song and Where To Now St Peter.

Elton was great from 1970 until 1976, and he's had occasional moments of greatness since then. But let's be honest -- since 'Blue Moves' way back when in '76, he's been primarily an MOR adult contemporary artist, NOT a rock artist. He's not much different today from Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow.

The Beatles were a cultural and musical force that put out an unmatchable body of work in only seven-and-a-half years (which is even more unbelievable when you realize that most artists today take two-to-three years just to make ONE album). Their songs set the standard for all rock bands in their wake. The comparison is ridiculous.

Portuguese poetry is 'better' than French poetry.

I'm not fluent in either language.
I don't write poetry.
I haven't studied the history of poetry or its elements.
I don't recite poetry in public.

But Portuguese poetry is 'better' than French poetry.

"He's not much different today from Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow."

To a musician, the question is, Much different? in popular music? Some gimmick or other doesn't make the MUSIC different. Do you have any specifics in mind? Diamond and Manilow differentiated themselves to appeal to target audiences. Elton did in the early days but I think he succeeded more as a musician as the decades have passed and he continued to develop. There are academic classes available in which you can study his development.

The short song forms are all of the same category. There's no advanced harmony, generally speaking. There's a slight increase in the level of artistically constrained ambiguity in the releases of long-lived groups, but it's a reaction not an intention.

I once saw Elton John stumbling out of the Carlton Hotel dressed in a polka-dot clown suit, draped over his Italian lover on the way to his limo. It was disgusting!

Why do these same trolls post these innane topics about who are better than the Beatles all the time?

Do they not have lives?
Worse they probably don't even know any of the artists songs other than titles.
