Does anyone know about what new MET (HD or otherwise) DVD's or Blu-Rays might be on the horizon? SOMEONE out there must have heard SOMETHING.

I long to get the recent MET Barber of Seville with Flores, Damrau, etc. I've heard there is some activity to produce it on DVD or something, but nothing since. Anybody know? Seems to me that would be better than anything yet of the Barber.

Robt. Meyers -- Florez sang it at Chicago Lyric Opera last year with Joyce Di Donato and Nathan Gunn. There may be pirates of it, but there should be commercial CDs and DVDs. Maybe the success of the new Florez-Bartoli "Sonnambula" will encourage Polygram/Decca to do it. I haven't heard about the Met "Barber", but someone is sure to have a broadcast or on film.

The MET HD movie-cast of BARBIERE was with Florez and DiDonato not Damrau .... even though the Damrau one was aired on the radio ... at least on SIRIUS.

S. Holmes says:
Sorry, Mr. Florez cancelled ALL his Chicago BARBIERE's due to swallowing a fish-bone over in Italy. John Osborne filled in and did a wonderful job. The performance was broadcast on WFMT ... so there should be plenty of copies out there if you know where to look.

DGG will release the MET FALSTAFF with Freni/Horne/Bonney/Plishka/Pola/Lopardo, Levine conducting from October, 1992......on June 30, 2009. Keep those releases COMING!!!!

Thanks much for all the replies to my question about Met Barbiere. Sorry I didn't reply sooner; I'm new here and got lost; the replies just now showed up on my email. "If you know where to look!" That's exactly what I'd sure like to find out! I do internet searches --- nothing!

Robert .... hope I don't accidentally DELETE your e-mail ..... perhaps you should title it ABOUT BARBIERE! Looking forward to hearing from you!

There will be a "Barbiere" in London at the Royal Opera House relayed to parks in the area on July 15th, so hopefully that will make it to DVD, cast is DiDonato and Florez, Simon Keenlyside as Figaro (my fave) and Corbelli and Furlanetto. I love the Met production but hear this one is good too , and very funny. Robert Andersen

I know this isn't dealing with the Met, but I have heard about a much touted La Boheme with Villazon and Netrebko. Has anyone heard about this, or better yet, seen it?Sorry to introduce an odd tangent but I'm dying of curiosity.

In reply to an earlier post on May 31, 2009 6:27:08 AM PDT
S. Holmes says:
Laserdiscs were GREAT! Probably about 3/4 of them have been re-released on DVD ... but not all. The Pioneer ones have all made it .... not all the DGG ones.

S. Holmes says:
The BOHEME "movie" will be coming out. They will use the recent DGG Netrebko/Villazon recording (from concert performances) as a soundtrack .... and will be lip-synced, but NOT by all the singing principals!!! While a curiosity (and I'll certainly buy it) .... for the "live" experience and involvement.....the three MET DVD's I would recommend first. They are: Scotto/Pavarotti, Stratas/Carreras and Gheorghiu/ Vargas ..... the latter in widescreen HD.

I was in HMV, Kanata, Ottawa, Canada and saw Metopera La Boheme (Angela Gheorghiu), Manon Lescaut (Karita Mattila) and Peter Grimes - bought all three, asked about future releases - "I didn't know", and could I buy them on line - "no, on line sales don't encourage impulse buying". Same reason Canadian Tire no longer sells on line. If anyone knows how to get Metopera HD please let me know (

Also available: Julie Taymor's Magic Flute in English from the Met giftshop. Amazon has Eugene Onegin with Fleming and Hvorostovsky, I Puritani with Netrebko, The First Emperor, Hansel & Gretl, and MacBeth. Waiting to hear what the fall will bring

Yes, going to Amazon ... movies .... and typing METROPOLITAN OPERA should yield ALL that's available. Sept/Oct is usually when new cd's and dvd's are announced ..... I will certainly post any news of DVD releases HERE .... when I hear. Hopefully, others will do the same.

I just found this discussion, but I, too, have been looking for and would be interested to find the DVD of the MET Barber to which you refer. I saw the HD live performance, and, in, my view, it was an absolutely superb production. It would be ashamed for it NOT to be issued. Great singing and great fun. Florez was excellent, and the ending, where Figaro (the Swedish baritone Peter Mattai) passes out business cards to the front row audience was a show-stopper. He sang pretty well too!

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 14, 2009 11:39:30 AM PDT
I also am interested in this DVD (Met Barber) and also the Met Magic Flute with Nathan Gunn which is for sale now at the Met Gift shop and on line thru that shop at it is not available anywhere else (that I can find) but at the Met site. Often wonder how they can restrict it like that.

Posted on Jun 14, 2009 2:04:36 PM PDT
Do you mean the latest one, where Damrau is Rosina? That's the one I want! I would imagine not, if Figaro is passing out business cards in it.

After seeing Colin Davis and David McVicar's 2003 Covent Garden production, Julie Taymor's Magic Flute really paled in comparison. Being shortened, for children and in English, all that aside, this production is all that is wrong with opera today. I've seen it live at the Met and I've seen bits and pieces of the DVD with Levine at the podium, which is a little better but not much.

I don't see why it should matter whether a DVD was done at the Met or not if there are better productions from other houses available. There is a recent Met production of Lucia di Lammermoor which was shown on PBS with Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala, and Mariusz Kwiecien. If and when THIS comes out on DVD/Blu-ray it'll be an instant add on to my collection.

Fall is usually when the MET announces any upcoming DVD or CD releases .... and the MET online and/or Opera News is the best place to look. I promise to immediately list HERE any releases I find ... or hear about. As of NOW the Met BARBIERE and LUCIA are only availalbe in "home" versions .... that people have made from the transmissions on T.V. We can hope and pray that these two are among the ones the MET is considering for commercial release.

S. Holmes says:
Sept. 1, DGG will release the Met Centenial Gala (previously released on Pioneer). Though the preliminary (no track listings) info lists the same artists and composers as the previous release, the Gala is listed as a 2-DVD set, which means that it could possibly include the MANY selections that were not previously released. We can only hope that this release will be the complete 2-part concert.
