I loved most of her DH books. Loved the dream hunter books. But upon opening and reading the preface for the newest dream hunter book, with more torture, more horrific bloodshed, more of the worst childhood you could ever imagine, I realized I just can't read more of that. If it weren't every single story of hers, I could deal with it. But there's simply too many other PNR authors who manage to write awesome stories w/ much less hopelessness involved.
I get that it's therapeutic for her, but I'm going to have to bow out of these sessions.

try her league series. its def not as bad as her DH with horrific childhoods. Im in the same boat you are. The first book is alot like Ash's but the rest are def not as bad as her DH characters.

I almost gave up on The Guardian (Dream-Hunter) because of the torture but since I wanted to know what happened next I kept reading and it ended up being a really good book.

That one *does* turn out to be a great read, all things taken into consideration.

:)

What killed most of the series (including the Dream Hunters) for me was the one about the twit up in Seattle. And the reporter (newspaper? some sort of Nat'l Enquirer type rag, as I recall - where no-one really takes it all that seriously?).

So yep. Haven't bought anything else of hers. Thinking I'm going to create a specialized listing of the books I don't want, and try to off-load them all at once. I'll keep a few - just my faves though; but the rest are just taking up space that I don't have right now.

Nicole, I get your frustration. Sometimes you just grow out of an author and their style. I like a lot of SK's earlier DH books (which I gave another try in the last year or so after giving up on the series the first time around a long time ago). I'm glad I did as I found some books I really liked. But I've stopped reading her for now. I'm good with details. I remember stuff like characters and rules and history but at times she confused the heck out of me. Maybe I'll pick it up again but her work has fallen further down my TBR pile.

Once I finished Acheron's book I had no desire to continue reading the series. I just didn't care anymore about any of the characters. And I thought Acheron's book was not very good either. My favorite book was Vane's book, Night Play.

I actually liked the seattle book the best. I thought it was funny, although I really really felt Susan would have been best for Ash.

~~~ SPOILER ALERT ~~~
You are right! Susan would have made a good match for Acheron. When the attraction for Tory started I was just not feeling it. But it grew on me and actually ended up seeming so right. Made me adore him all the more.
i've pretty much given up on her after the mess that was retribution...
I'm about 3/4 finished with the Seattle story and I'm not really liking Susan (name notwithstanding). I'm actually not liking the book all that much. My favorite so far is Valerius' story.
Susan, I didnt like the Seattle one either. That one was my least favorite of the series. Ok people, the Dark Hunters have a very special place in my heart so i kinda feel compeled to finish the series I have been putting off readin No Mercy and Retribution. What i would like to know is how bad is Retribution?
Posted on Feb 11, 2012 6:58:22 AM PST
retribution is ok, if you don't want any greek mythology and like native american lore...but all the DH's we know and love barely make an appearance...I think Sin shows up briefly, and a smattering (if that) of Ash
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is getting sick of all the childhood's from hell. In one or two book I understand not everyone had a nice childhood but, it gets to the point where you just want a nice dose of fiction where everyone had a if not good childhood atleast decent.
I didn't mind Retribution, I liked it. Have you read any of the Kenyon/Diana Loves Belador series. I love the main characters in that series. This is an ongoing story there is no HEA @ the end, usually a cliff hanger. I Hate That!!!!!!! Still I love the books, those are always a must read when the book comes out.
