Hi. I recently played Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Condemned: Criminal Origins. Are there any games that are similar to these? I've found some I might like, but I'm not sure they'll run on my Win 7 laptop. One example is Penumbra: Black Plague. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There is a great and pretty new indie game called Lone Survivor but it has a 16-bit style to it. I was impressed how immersive it was still.

The Penumbra Collection goes on sale often for around $5 and has all three Penumbra games. I'd keep an eye out for that as they were made by the Amnesia devs.

Also, those same developers have a new Amnesia game coming out as well as an unannounced survival horror title.

Have you played any of the Amnesia user content? There is a huge modding community for Amnesia and you can probably find quite a lot of levels to play through.

Penumbra Collection [Download] - $9.99 here on Amazon.

Thanks for replying. I've played Penumbra: Black Plague on two rental sites. The game gives an error every time. From what I've read elsewhere, it's not uncommon to have problems with that game if you're running Windows 7. Too bad for me. I really wanted to play that series.

It's nice to know there will be more content from the developers, though. I'll be doing some searches. I appreciate the heads up on them. In the meantime, I hope to find some other games to play. :-)

If you like Condemned, you'll most likely like Condemned 2.

+1 to Condemned 2... love that franchise.

Amnesia : A Machine for Pigs is one of the new horrors on the way. Not sure what the other is yet.

BTW, when did Condemned go to PC?

Good question...

Does it list it on Zon's store page for it?

EDIT: Nope.

I just watched the trailer for the new Amnesia game. Looks interesting, to say the least.

@Hmph - I'm not sure what year Condemned was released for PC. I saw it here, but decided to buy it elsewhere. Great game for $14.99...

EDIT: I wanted to add that I love first person shooters. There are two games I tried on the game rental sites that I couldn't play. Cryostasis - I have trouble with my eyes. The all white graphics at the beginning made it hard for me to navigate as I literally couldn't see my way through the blizzard in the opening scene. The second one is Cold Fear. I wanted to play that, but the controls were hard to master with the ship rocking to and fro. *blush*

Have you tried the Dead Space games?

I had no idea that it went PC that long ago. I was always under the impression it was a console exclusive...oh well, more people get to enjoy it. I need to go back and finish the game with only melee weapons and get to 1000 achievement pts.

@Capt - I've been looking at the Dead Space games. Haven't found a demo yet and I'm reluctant to buy games without a trial. I have to admit I bought Condemned based on reviews. Got lucky with that one. It runs great on this laptop. :-) Do you have a Steam account?

@Hmph - I was about to say 2005-2006, but I wanted to check the game first. Glad you found the info. :-D

Dead Space is one of my top 3 favorite series of all-time.

Which one is the best? I'm seriously considering Dead Space 2. Is there more than one difficulty setting in that series?

I think if you skip Dead Space 1 you lose out on some of the story.

Both games frequently go on sale for $5 each. Sometimes they run double packs for $7.49 for both.

I recommend keeping an eye on them at It's a great way to track sales.

Steam also runs sales on them periodically. Usually you can find them on either Steam or Origin sales. I think the Amazon versions use SecuROM, which some people really hate.

I picked up 2 a few months ago for $5, but many people recommended I not play 2 until I play 1. I found 1 on sale somewhere for $2.99 and activated it on Origin, but I haven't played either yet.

Yes, there are difficulty settings in each. I can't say which one I enjoyed more...the sequel just continued what was so great in the original. I've heard that they are changing the gameplay in the upcoming 3rd game, but I hope they just leave it like it is. The atmosphere is one of the best things about the just feel isolated the whole time and that adds to the creepiness factor. Occasionally, you'll come across an NPC and you just long for human interaction between those encounters. It's just a well-written series.

Wow, you two have convinced me to take a chance on the series. Thanks a million. Going to check the sales.

@Hmph - You mentioned your top 3 favorites. What are the others, if you don't mind posting them?

In no particular order:

Dead Space
Demons Souls/Dark Souls (not really a series, but spiritually related)

Honorable mentions:

Gears of War
Elder Scrolls

Well, I tried Clive Barker's Jericho. It's not my cup of tea.

Looks like Condemned 2 isn't available for PC. :-(

Riyad Kalla says:
Jericho was an odd duck... awesome character design (e.g. disgusting/detailed enemies and bosses) stuck with some relatively lame levels and annoying gameplay mechanics with what could have been a solid story had it been told more effectively.

I didn't *like* the game, but it did seriously freak me out at parts and always had that Silent Hill-esque feeling of total abandonment and desolation when the other NPCs weren't around which is a unique feeling that I've only had 2 or 3 games ever cause me to emote (typically I cannot suspend disbelief long enough to feel nervous).

NOW, on that note... Silent Hill 4: The Room was one of my fav games... I didn't know much about SH before trying that game, it starts off slow and normal/uneventful and then everything just starts to fall apart... that game freaked me out, so to the OP looking for a good game to play, the SH series in general is great, but I really liked the way the story in 4 was told.

I know 2 is a lot of people's favorites (haven't played it yet, waiting for the HD remaster) and I found 3 solid, but still liked 4 better.

Hope that helps.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 12, 2012 8:27:25 AM PDT
Hi. Yes, that definitely helps. :-) I was wondering about the SH games. My son and I watched the movie a few years back, but I don't remember much about it. I've always been a horror fan. Edgar Allan Poe stories intrigued me and I was very interested in vampires as a teen. Haha! (I'm a 40-ish female.) I outgrew the vampire stage quite some time ago. Then came slasher horror which is still my favorite genre on film.

I'd like to find more games featuring serial killers. Hence, my interest in Condemned: Criminal Origins. I never would've guessed I'd like playing video games this much, but that game actually scared me.

Have you played any of the F.E.A.R. games? I just bought F.E.A.R. 3 and it's downloading now. Can't wait to try it! I checked the system requirements on a site called Can You Run It. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll run on this laptop.

Riyad Kalla says:
Just so you know, FEAR 3 is the weakest in the series (done by a 3rd party) -- you also are missing quit a bit of story.

FEAR 1/2 were great (done by the same team as Condemned, which is why I assume you were looking at it) -- the story is creepy/strange/awesome like Condemned, and 1 ends with a cliffhanger that 2 picks up wonderfully and drives home in this great horrible way.

3 is sort of an ancillary story that is miss-able unfortunately (unless you got it cheap, then ok).

Silent Hill is like a more story-driven Resident Evil experience and if you like being scared, they work great. Resident Evil is more about beating/pounding the genetically-engineered story line into whatever shape they need it in for each story (which works sometimes and sucks others... typically somewhat cheesy in my experience).

Silent Hill is more about horror/insanity/demons and is usually a different story each time, but has a few carry-over characters from time to time.

Oh, wow. I wanted to buy the original FEAR, but I was worried about the Windows 7 issue. My old desktop won't run these games so I'm finding myself between a rock and a hard place when it comes to buying games. I got FEAR 3 for $11.53. Not bad, but it's no bargain if the game won't run. :-(

I'm gonna check prices for SH. That sounds like my kind of series. Thanks again for your help.

Ah can't believe I forgot Dead Space. Yes buy it and love it! Great series.

I loved Condemned, didn't like Condemned 2 honestly. Didn't like the direction they took it.
