Looking at getting a UV & IR camera, have been looking at the Fuji S5 Pro? Do you recommend this camera? Does Nikon or Canon have a UV&IR camera? would you recommend their kit? Help

Tom Martin says:
From what I read the Fuji S5 Pro is not an IR-UV camera, the Fujifilm IS Pro is the camera you are talking about. : Fujifilm today announced the launch of the IS Pro - its third camera designed to record non-visible light and aimed at the law enforcement, scientific, medical and fine art communities. The camera - we assume it to be based on the S5 Pro - has a modified CCD filter pack and is sensitive to Ultraviolet and Infrared light between 380nm and 1000nm. Fujifilm are offering the IS Pro in four kits ranging from $2599 for the body only to $4999 with a Zeiss 50mm Macro 1:2 F2.0 Lens, suitable filters, HyperUtility processing software and even protective armour for the camera body. This comprehensive package represents a 'turn-key' solution to Infrared photography and requires only the addition of a Quartz UV lens for optimum Ultraviolet sensitivity. As was the case with its predecessors the IS Pro appears to be available - officially at least - in the US market only.

edit: there are companies that will convert Canon and Nikon cameras to IR cameras.

I'd heard the Fujifilm IS Pro was very restricted in who could buy one and has since been discontinued.

EdM says:
Both Nikon and Canon cameras can be converted for IR and/or UV.

Further there are lenses that are designed to be useful in either or both of those ranges. For Nikon, this website of nature photographer Bjørn Rørslett, has example photos in IR and in UV, as well as lens reviews often mentioning how good the lenses are for IR specifically, and also for UV.

In the reviews section of this website,, there is an article titled:
"All You Ever Wanted to Know About Digital UV and IR Photography, But Could Not Afford to Ask".

There is one lens, the Coastal Optics 60 mm f/4 UV-Vis-IR APO Macro, that is outstanding as a lens and as an IR and UV lens, for a price. This manual focus lens is said to be the modern reference lens for IR and UV in the write-up in the lenses section, and from there in the macro section of lenses. It has a Nikon mount and can be used on Canon with an Nikon F-mount to EOS adaptor.
