Hello,

just bought the Canon 60d. Love taking photos and I'm still a novice when it comes to the SLR. I've been working on taking photos of motorcycle racing. Right now I have the kit lens that I purchased with the camers (Canon Ef-S 18-135mm). I'm looling for a decent telephoto lens. Any lens recommendations??

If I had all the money in the world, that would be great, but I'm on a budget. I know you usually get what you pay for, but any reasonably priced lenses out there?

1) how much longer do you need the focal length (for simplicity -- set your kit lens to 100mm and compose the subject into one corner of the frame; if it fits 1/4 of the frame [that is half width/half height] you are looking for 200mm lens. If it fits 1/9th [1/3 across, 1/3 up] you are talking 300mm, etc.)

2) you are talking high-speed sport. That means you need a high shutter speed (image stabilization won't help you; your shutter speeds will likely be high enough to not need stabilization). High shutter speeds will mean using either/both high ISO setting or/and fast lens (f2.8 minimum -- this means most consumer zooms with f3.5-5.6 ratings won't be viable -- especially at the longer focal lengths where any motion is magnified [1 pixel blur at 100mm becomes 2 pixel blur at 200mm, etc.])

One person's reasonableness is another's outrageous. How much is "reasonable" to you?

Avoid the cheap Canon 75-300 - image quality isn't very good and it has no IS for the money.

$200-250 or less - Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II
$400 range - Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM
$700 range - Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens
