I have a full complement of c. 25 year old darkroom equipment including Omega and Besseler enlargers. I'd like to give this stuff to a school or club that is serious about film photography. I live near Amherst/Northampton in western Mass. Any suggestions?

Thank you. Jack

In my experience, E-Bay or ad in paper to unload. Schools buy new equipment.

i'd call your local schools that have a photography program. you'll do most of the research and work till you get a taker, but at least you know it's going to a good school and will be used

Definitely look around to local schools, but I'd go for a college that doesn't have one yet. At this point I don't think it would get much use in any high schools, and I'm a high school student.

The school/college itself probably wont want the equipment.
But, there are often Photography Clubs that might.

Bessler 23C's make good door stops, or if you can find another one you could string a hammock between them.
Just kidding - Good luck.

A high school may very likely appreciate and take advantage of the donation. I graduated from high school last year and my school had a photography program that used a lot of equipment that had been donated. Many high schools are still introducing students to photography with 35mm SLR's and a black and white darkroom. I'm sure glad mine did.

I would call or email the schools in the area to see if they would be interested. Community colleges may also take you up on the offer. I'm sure there is a way for it to be put to good use.

There is info on darkrooms on the internet if you search it out, as well as at the big photography dealers, like BHPhotoVideo, e.g. However, I would caution you to find and take a class in a local school or community college on shooting B/W film with darkroom developing, e.g., os you find out more of what you would be getting into.

A darkroom has really stringent requirements on keeping out any light - being truly dark except in a controlled manner. Further, film developing uses dangerous, corrosive, and potentially poisonous chemicals, and such may have disposal rules for the waste "water", e.g. Some people also develop chemical sensitivity to some of the chemicals, sort of like an allergy. So, a person new to darkrooms really needs a guide and should not attempt it on his/her own. IMO.

Personally, I occasionally like using a darkroom, but I really appreciate digital photography w/o the chemical risk, and such that mistakes do not cost anything. With film photography, you don't really know how your photos will turn out until after you've spent the money for film, developing and printing ... With digital, you can see photos on screen, and toss any bad shots w/o any cost for printing.

A lot of schools also accept donations for items that would normally cost 100x times more new. Enlargers aren't cheap, and there aren't a high demand for them, so they sell for very cheap 2nd hand. I'm sure some schools would love them.

Hi Jack,

I have recently set up a Community Darkroom in Cork City, Ireland - http://the-dark-room.org/
and would be very interested in taking any equipment off your hands, this is a new project and we are working hard to build our community and improve the facilities.

Any help is always appreciated :)

Hi Naomi-
Good thought, but shipping costs would be prohibitive.

Do you still have the equipment on your hands? Photoworks in Glen Echo Park, MD, is a long-running non-profit (501(c)(3)) resource and teaching center, where darkroom photography is still alive and well (alongside digital). http://www.glenechophotoworks.org/ I suggest contacting Frank P. (Tico) Herrera, a former Guggenheim Fellow on the faculty on the darkroom's needs. There's a phone number on the website. It's just possible that someone from Photoworks would be in western New England anyway -- or could make a special trip there -- to pick up the equipment.

Jack,

Thanks for replying :) my husband actually has a kayak warehouse in southhampton and would be able to collect in the next couple of weeks if you still had the equipment.
I do however appreciate that you might wish to donate to something a little more local :)

Kind regards

Naomi

I have a 4x5 Beseler enlarger with a cold light head plus other film darkroom equipment such as tanks, film reels, safelights, etc. I no longer do film. I'm in central Colorado.

Hi Jack, I just ran into your post while trying to find darkroom equipment. I am the head of a photography group that teaches kids the art of photography. Two months ago our lab was destroyed by an arsonist. I now teach what I can out of my home. How much are you wanting for your equipment? I saw that you live in Mass. would you be willing to ship?

Much interested in the developing equipment, I have a lot of 35mm film rolls that need developed, just don't know what is on them. Let me know.

Dear People: i'll let you know what transpires. I do not want to ship (too much careful packing required). Do not want to sell it to anyone who hasn't seen it. Ideally, would like to find a 501(c)3 organization (for a very small tax benefit) that will come and get it. "It" is near Amherst in western Mass, c. 2 hrs from Boston, 3 1/2 hrs from NYC, 8 hrs from Wash, DC.

I have darkroom equipment too, including a 4x5 Omega (I think I said Beseler last time) with a Zone VI cold light head which makes a large difference. But unlike Jack I'm in Colorado. I'd love to find a person or an organization interested in this. I have a good amount of other darkroom equipment, too. I've not tried EBay or anywhere but here, so far. are you selling or are you giving? If you are giving it away we would love to have them.
