I think I just got YLOD!

I was playing today when, for no reason, my PS3 shut down by itself and won't power back on.
I've tried turning the main power switch off and on, but all it does is turn on for a second then shuts down. My controllers won't even sync up, so I have to turn it on manually.
When it powers on, the light is green, then yellow and then flashes red. I can't even eject the game disc. I feel like crying.
Any thoughts and suggestions on how to fix will be much appreciated.

If it truly is a YLOD you will need about an hour to two hours to complete the task. A guide can be found here:

A customer says:
Yeah. Sorry. Really, I feel ya. I had to get a whole new PS3 because of the YLoD. Getting the disc out is easy enough with a set of screwdrivers, at least.

Mrs. User says:
:( I sent mine in to be repaired, thankfully I didn't have a disc stuck. It was $140 out of warranty. Good luck with the fix if you try.

Sorry to hear that dude, my PS3 crashed too, a few days ago, (Friday the 13th!) bad thing is my Mortal Kombat disc is still inside, I don't think I'll send it to Sony for repair since I don't think they'll give me my console back, (they send you a refurbished one) and I have a TON of downloaded stuff from about 6 years, I'll buy a new PS3 later on this year and I'll try to pull my game disc out following some directions on

James says:
Radioactive Man,

That's correct. Sony will send you back someone else's refurbished PS3. When I got the YLOD a couple years back I wrote down the serial number of my PS3, sent my PS3 into Sony for repairs, but received another PS3 back. With the second PS3 I bought, I didn't even bother getting the extended warranty because any repair jobs from now on will be fixed by a 3rd party repairer.

With the disc stuck inside, depending on what model PS3 you have, this may or may not work.

I had a disc stuck inside mine when I got the YLOD and that worked. Apparently it doesn't work for all models, but it's worth a shot to see if it works on yours.

If it doesn't work I don't have any other suggestions, sorry.

I like Sony, but that's a crappy move not sending you back your own system. What about your HDD. I've upgraded mine to 750 GB.
Anyways, I found a semi-local repair shop that specializes in fixing consoles. Hope it works.

Thank you James, I'll give it a try for sure to get my game disc back, and buy a new console, and later I'll found someone who can fix my old console for less money than Sony wants to charge me.

Just one question, what model is your PS3? Old model (fat) or Slim?

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 10:11:48 PM PDT
It's an 80 GB fatboy with backwards compatibility.

dude try pspros got ylod they fixed it and saved all my stuff. 500gb's worth cost $123

Thank you Meejie P, I'll take a look, mine is also a fat 80 gb model CECHE11, I've had this console for about 6 years and I don't want to lose all that info and downloads, I know I could still download averything to the new one, but that would take waay too long, so 3rd party PS3 repairer is the way to go for the fattie.

Meejie P says:
i have a fat 60 (upgraded). the fattie flaw will catch up to everybody eventually. I love it and don't want to give up ps2 compatibility. 90 day warranty as well.

Sha Gojyo says:
you should call Sony (1-800-345-7669) and purchase a 2 year extended warranty for $60 ($45 for PSN+ members), after that Sony will fix your PS3 for free.

Posted on Apr 30, 2012 11:57:15 AM PDT
Can't buy that plan if your system is already out of warranty.

right xsniper, duh! my 60 fattie still humming along. any update radioactive?

Sony repair is something like $150 and you will lose all of the data on your hard drive since it syncs to the motherboard and will reformat in another console. From what I've read sony does not send you a separate ps3 but opens yours up and replaces the motherboard hence why you lose your data which is why I sent mine to a third party since what I wanted was my hundreds of hours of fallout saves =D.

Meejie, I got a new PS3 and I started downloading lots of my games from my download history on PSN and seems like every game I'm putting on the disc tray, needs to download and install the damn updates, It's ok thou, my old PS3 will be taken care of next month, I want to recover my old game saves (I'm at chapter 7 in my Hardcore run on Dead Space 2, that game will cause me a heart attack, I swear)

Posted on Apr 30, 2012 6:39:57 PM PDT
I got mine fixed. I took it to UBREAKIFIX and they repaired it in a few hours for $80, game saves in tact. Why anyone would ship it to Sony is beyond me.

So what exactly was wrong with the PS3? Just curious.
