Benghazigate: Causes?

John M. Lane says:
The testimony over causes of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi has concentrated on one or two possible causes while ignoring one the demonstrators themselves identified, Obama's statements about how he "got bin Laden." Indeed, the Democratic National Convention had featured the slogan "bin Laden is dead and GM is Alive." Some news reports quoted demonstrators at Cairo shouting "Obama! We are ALL Osama now!"
Shouldn't this be added to the list of possible causes?

The administration initially attributed the cause to Muslim outrage about an obscure video deemed critical of Mohammad the Prophet. Others cite terrorist groups with suspected ties to al Qaeda. Shouldn't we include what the demonstrators were reportedly saying?

The cause of "Benghazigate" is righties' scandal envy. Paul Waldman:

"What's going on here? I can sum it up in two words: scandal envy. Republicans are indescribably frustrated by the fact that Barack Obama, whom they regard as both illegitimate and corrupt, went through an entire term without a major scandal. They tried with "Fast and Furious," but that turned out to be small potatoes. They tried with Solyndra, but that didn't produce the criminality they hoped for either. Obama even managed to dole out three-quarters of a trillion dollars in stimulus money without any graft or double-dealing to be found. Nixon had Watergate, Reagan had Iran-Contra, Clinton had Lewinsky, and Barack Obama has gotten off scott-free. This is making them absolutely livid, and they're going to keep trying to gin up a scandal, even if there's no there there. Benghazi may not be an actual scandal, but it's all they have handy."

The question I most want an answer to: Who censored CIA Director Petraeus' memo to omit references to terrorism and al Qaeda, and why did they do it?

ErikR says:
Yep, that's it, the Middle East was a magical fairy land where unicorns frolicked in gumdrop fountains until mean old Obama McScrooge went and killed the peace-loving, benevolent Osama bin-laden. Boy, I sure wish we could go back in time and un-kill him, what a bad idea to do it in the first place, right? Maybe we could go back and un-kill all of the taliban in Afghanistan, and shiite and sunni militias in Iraq, if we could we'd be so safe right now and nothing bad would ever happen again!

John M. Lane says:
You might be on to something, koko. Democrats do seem to have better scandals. Benghazigate already has all the elements of a Hollywood blockbuster.

I see Angela Jolie playing Jill Kelley and her twin sister, Natalie Khawam. Wouldn't you agree?

John M. Lane says:
Shouldn't we take into account what the anti-American demonstrators said their motive was, ErikR? They didn't seem to be chanting about an obscure video.

Shh! Don't ask any questions, John. This is supposed to be a right-wing conspiracy, remember?

I know it is, Roger. I just finished using my decoder ring on our marching orders.

ErikR says:
So, why were they chanting "Obama! We are ALL Osama now!" 1 1/2 years after the death of bin-laden if that was their motivation? Why didn't protests erupt at the time?

"All In Me" starring Audrey Bitoni and Sunny Leone; directed by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

John M. Lane says:
That's a good question, ErikR. I think that the Democrats' decision to feature that so prominently at their National Convention kept it in the headlines. Muslims are influenced by headlines too, especially on the anniversary of 9/11.

I'm not trying to say that's the only factor, but when the demonstrators chanted it, I think it should be included as a factor.

I like the title, koko, but am unfamiliar with your cast suggestions.

Remember, this production will involve a lot of "embed" activity. We'll need to cast Paula Broadwell's character very carefully. Maybe Sandra Bullock?

Roger says:
I was thinking the DNC slogan may have had something to do with it, but now I'm not so sure. The media pressings on the 11th anniversary of 9/11 makes a lot of sense.

Roger says:
Perhaps. However, I would leave that type of thinking to the families of those killed.

My point exactly!

Audrey Bitoni (born August 16, 1986) is an American pornographic actress and model.

Sunny Leone (born Karenjit Kaur Vohra May 13, 1981) is a Canadian actress, businesswoman, model and pornographic actress.

ErikR says:
Why were copts in Cairo worried about violence against them if the video was not the motivation for the riots? Occam's razor comes in to play here and when the protesters say the protests were about the video, others in the community do, and the government does then that's the most likely reason. Were there people there taking advantage of the outrage over the video to further other agendas; of course there were, terrorists and other extremists are opportunists and will use whatever means they can. Unless you can show some sort of grand conspiracy involving tens of thousands of unconnected people from numerous countries acting in a concerted manner to conceal their true motives.

"I'm not trying to say that's the only factor, but when the demonstrators chanted it, I think it should be included as a factor."

Consider it a factor to what end?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 16, 2012 2:02:44 PM PST
John M. Lane says:
The Democratic National Convention was only about a week before the attack, Roger. I think it's a mistake to ignore such potential factors.

I note that after the initial coverage, there are no references to such slogans. Maybe they weren't a factor? Or, maybe they were and it's inconvenient to evaluate their influence?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 16, 2012 2:07:15 PM PST
John M. Lane says:
If we're looking at "spontaneous riots," ErikR, I believe we should listen to what the rioters themselves said. Perhaps they were outraged by the video, but why would they refer to a Democratic campaign theme about "bin Lade is dead. GM is alive"?

Some reports indicate that the video only had about 200 views since being posted in May. How many Muslims saw Obama taking credit for killing bin Laden and destroying al Qaeda?

I don't know, but am curious about it. Aren't you?

"Causes?"

I believe we've already been told what the "cause" was by a number of liberals on this forum. "They were in the wrong place at the wrong time."

They ( dems) spiked that football hard in august and everyone saw it. After that, picking a date was just obvious.

John M. Lane says:
Didn't we know that they were in the "wrong place" at the "wrong time," K.A. Lien? The date of September 11th is hardly a secret.

Apparently, it well known by those in that place (Benghazi) that it was very risky. Yet, they were left there and no added security was provided.

The intelligence on the ground appears to have been pretty accurate. The British and the Red Cross pulled out. We didn't and we also didn't reinforce our consulate there.

Why not?

John M. Lane says:
I agree Jim Penname. Benghazi was part of the cost of Obama's victory lap after SEAL TEAM Six got bin Laden.
