Romney Threading The Needle On Immigration

Look at that Mormon tap dance! I didn't know he had it in him!

How do you condemn a Supreme Court ruling that slaps down Arizona's crazy laws without upsetting Hispanics that you need in November?

And how do you praise the ruling to court those Hispanics without upsetting your right wing bigoted base that thinks all aliens should be perp-walked back into Mexico?

Romney was in Arizona today fund raising (closed to the press and public) and I would have loved to hear how he managed this.

My guess is he addresses the groups separately and tells each, quite emphatically, what he thinks they want to hear.

To the Latinos he will praise the ruling and tell them he supports immigration - just not the way Obama is doing it - without ever saying if he thinks Obama's EO is a good or bad one.

To the rednecks he will talk all about how he is going to kick every last Hispanic out of the country and the mules they rode in on too.

Romney has painted himself into quite the corner. Let's see how the man who has no reflection in a mirror plays it out and who he lies to the hardest...

Romney doesn't have much to say about anything these days. I think that he believes that if he takes no real stands on anything that the right will just fill the vacuum with their own beliefs and make up that he stands for whatever they personally want him to stand for. Its an interesting tactic.

remain absolutely wordlessly neutral and let people see what they want to see.

Great movie. Great reference to it. Fits great.

Not quite the caliber of C but pretty darn good anyway.

Nameinuse,

You have it. Earlier C made a great reference to Oedipus Rex and now you do the same with a classic movie. The level of discourse is rising. Soon we will all be quoting Shakespeare.

I see Romney playing well Richard III (Norton Critical Editions).

If not the full The Tragedy of Coriolanus: The Oxford Shakespeare The Tragedy of Coriolanus (Oxford World's Classics)

Somewhere in the past I saw a guy do an imitation of John Wayne doing Shakespeare. He used that line. Now whenever I see or hear it I mentally think of how Wayne would say it. It always makes me "laugh out loud".

eguy,
Good post. Romney was doomed the day the Tea Party chained the GOP and made it a slave of prejudices.

J. jones says:
Moderate,
I don't think that Obama is going to give Romney the option of staying neutral on anything. See, the Tea Party is actually Obama's unlikely ally. They won't allow Romney to pivot too sharply, and both they and Obama are going to force him back into a conservative corner. That means he will be hard pressed to reach the 10% of Latinos he doesn't yet have, not to mention because of the Obama camp winning the Supreme Court battle against the unpopular Arizona law, and because of Obama's executive order suspending undocumented workers from being deported. How is Romney going to reach Latinos when Obama ads are playing nonstop of him saying he would veto the Dream Act and telling Latinos to deport themselves?

C. Scanlon says: "remain absolutely wordlessly neutral and let people see what they want to see."

Ever see this movie? I think Romney may just be a new Chauncy Gardner...
