Ostrova says:
For what it's worth, here are statistics on all-time worst genocides:
Chairman Mao leads with over 63 million dead Chinese, 1946-76. If you go carrying pictures of him, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow, ex. possibly other genocide freaks.
At #2, "Uncle Joe" Josef Stalin, somewhere between 23 and 60 million in the USSR, from offing political prisoners and starving Ukranians to death in the 1920s.Third is a long-time favorite, Adolf Hitler, approx 12 million all told.4th, Hideki Tojo, 40th Prime Minister of Japan, 5 million. "The Rape of Nanking"? His! Also testing biological weapons on his own people, killing many thousands. 5th, Pol Pot, 2,500,000 Cambodians.

My figure for the Soviet Union is 80 million. That's from a demographic model I wrote in the 1980s. There may have been new information available since then, especially after the USSR collapsed.

Bart, you could be right. I was surprised there was apparently a lot of uncertainty about exact numbers. I thought the Nazis kept very careful records, but I guess they couldn't always count before they slaughtered. And maybe in the case of Stalin they can't be sure how many died in gulags? I also don't know if there have been any reassessments of what was actually genocide and what could have been something else, just as harmful but technically not persecution of an ethnic group. Just saying.

Ostrova,

One of my best sources was Antonov-Ovseyenko's 1982 "The Time of Stalin." Apparently he gained access to the records of the Central Statistical Administration. His estimate was 100 million, but he counted deficit births, which I think is a mistake.
