I hope it wasn't Risperidal.

Definitely. Few will go on violent rampages as a result of psychotropic drugs alone if the impulse wasn't there in the first place.

What do you mean by "unintended consequences"? This is certainly not the first time SSRI's and such have been linked to shooting events.

So, if the psychotropic drug removes impulse control, and the person already had such impulses ... A catastrophe is the result.

How does it remove impulse control? I've taken sertraline for years for anxiety and have never had a violent impulse. Like K.A. Lien said, you can't form knee-jerk reactions just because someone takes an anti-depressant or other psychotropic and then goes postal. I'd venture to guess most haven't had the drug in their system long enough for it to have taken effect. It takes 4 to 6 weeks for such drugs to have full effect on an individual. The kid might have also gone off his meds as well.

I have a good friend who works at a ranch for emotionally disturbed boys. He tells me these boys can act normal for weeks, one little thing will set them off and if they had a gun you would be dead. I'm no expert, but how do you treat that? BTW, these boys are already on meds.

Emotionally disturbed is quite different. I deal with some of them too. They're hard to control.

Some of these meds have been shown to have different reactions in kids as compared with adults, I do know that.

I'm not in favour of locking people up if there's not a good cause, but if someone with extreme mental issues has been shown to have violent tendencies, I would not rule it out entirely either.

The word of God, hard work, and the paddle (swats) for disobedience. Exactly what Anderson Cooper 360 decries.
