neonpisces says:
"We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn't stop with Hiroshima - the Japanese weren't surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.

There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they'd really call for a ceasefire.

Were this to happen, the images from Gaza might be unpleasant - but victory would be swift, and the lives of our soldiers and civilians spared..."

He goes on to suggest that there is no such thing as an innocent Palestinian civilian.

Whether the Netanyahu government takes his view is another question. However this intransigence is sobering. Sharon likely speaks for a huge Israeli demographic.

We don't converse much about events that don't immediately involve the US in this forum. However American policy toward the entire region, including Iran, pivots on the Israeli/Palestinian problem.

However Gaza unfolds, it will impact the U.S.

I don't think so, I'd guess 25-30% sort of like the "tea party" did at one time in America.

neonpisces says:
I'll cross out "huge" and say "large". 30% is a significant number.

However I believe it's probably much higher. The peace camp was never large, and has probably diminished. This is my guess, I don't have statistics at hand. However I do have an anecdotal sense derived from conversations with Israeli friends.

All things equal, this response is restrained. In the 1967 war which lasted just 7 days, Israel took the entire Sinai up to the Nile and the entire West Bank. Unfortunately, the current strategy only sends the terrorists into hiding where they resurface 1-2 years later.

1967 was open warfare. Israel would devastate any regional opponent in open warfare. But, you can't defeat terrorism with convential weapons effectively.

Sharon is correct. The Israelis have spent too much time coddling Hamas.

Let's never let Sharon the Younger get together with John McCain, especially if Lindsay Graham is in the room. Oy vey!

What troubles me about Israel right now is that they are following the British example in Northern Island a while back -- as soon as an effective leader ages through his angriest years and becomes someone you can negotiate with, assassinate him. Makes you wonder if they really want the hostilities to end. It always serves somebody's interests. In a parliamentary sysm, triply so.

Gomb says:
This 'flattening' would be a tragic loss of life, but unfortunately may be necessary to preserve humankind. Much like when a limb is amputated to stop a cancerous growth, this entire region may need to be eradicated before they get a nuclear weapon themselves as they have nothing to lose and would not hesitate to use it.

Level Gaza? Unfortunately, it may be the only option. A lot of people believe the Palestinian Arabs simply don't want peace with Israel, and I suspect they might be right, much as I might prefer a diplomatic solution.

Boomy says:
I don't think the flattening of Gaza would accomplish that, it would inflame the rest of the Mid-East...Israel knows this or they would have done that long ago...I would probably agree too, if it would have solved it...but it won't.

You know how some 2nd amendment types talk really big here about resisting the govt with handguns and hunting rifles? Well, in Gaza it assault rifles, IEDs, Rockets, and RPGs. So you can flatten buildings and just like at Monte Cassino the ruins make much better defensive positions. Then what?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 19, 2012 1:15:57 PM PST
Weasel: Exactly. No one seems to ask, let alone answer, the qestion, "Tell me how this ends."

I am greatly influenced by the astonishing story of how the Irish, after 900 years of occupation and resistance, got their country back. "Flatten" Gaza, indeed.

LMW: Israel has given back areas of land greater in size than itself for peace treaties with both Jordan and Egypt after Israel won the 6 day war in 1967. I think that is pretty indicative of a people who want peace.

This is not war in the traditional sense. Israel is fighting an indigenous population who demand sovereignty.

The American historical analogy that Sharon is searching for is not Nagasaki, but Wounded Knee.

LMW: Important correction. By "they" I meant, not the people, but the politicians. I referred to the British model.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 19, 2012 1:44:39 PM PST
There were Palestinian Jews (indigenous) when Palestine was divided by Britain into Israel and Jordan. People of both groups moved. If the (Muslim) Palestinians don't rule their own homeland, it is the doing of the King of Jordan.

No analogy is needed. The history exists right there. Read up on it. :-)

LMW: Do you have a recommendation?

I have read a lot on the subject, but admittedly only the Forties.

I am working on a Unified Field Study of the 20th century as an expession of the Easter Rebellion. : )
