I don't see any news reports about this happening in NYC, only New Jersey. Do you have any links to this?

Gotta love them O unions. No interest what so ever in doing a good job only in using their union as a club.

It didn't happen in New Jersey either. Those electricians were told to go to a different location because that location had sufficent workers at the time.

Over-exaggerated to be honest. Don't get your news anywhere but NJ.com for this topic. But unions are a strong presence here always have been.,

The president and business manager of Hightstown-based Local 94 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Chip Gerrity, also said it would be foolish to favor one set of workers over another after the devastation to the electric infrastructure.

"I want union guys first, obviously," Gerrity said. "But with an event like this you want everybody you can get."

This will be one of those stories that will be repeated for years, just like the many false stories from Katrina. People won't bother to check the authenticity of the claim, they'll just repeat it as truth.

C. Batty says:
And the sorry fact is that electricians are going to have to go through some sort of vetting process to prove that they are electricians and not someone's dad who thinks he can help because he rewired a lamp once.

Yes, but even in a time of crises, you have to verify those.

It's not because of Neil Young's song?

Most of these people are coming in huge utility trucks from all over the country. We're not talking about a single guy carrying a multimeter. Those will show up later.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 4, 2012 2:10:42 PM PST
nobody xeroxes their licenses and then goes to help

the power company tells them to go
because of the reciprocal deals and they go

"People won't bother to check the authenticity of the claim, they'll just repeat it as truth."

How do you check authenticity of a claim, when you get the original story from multiple news sources? This was the original story and you'll notice an "update" on the page.

Just wait til you hear about all the fraud that will take place under the guise of contractors, roofers etc. Unsuspecting victims will get robbed blind by giving their money to these crooks thinking that they will get their homes fixed, but they will take the money and run to never be found. The victims need to hire reputable contractors, roofers etc. from local established companies. Not fly by night people that come from out of state, etc. That's what happened here after Katrina. I had people coming knock at my door unsolicited looking to replace my roof. After checking out numerous roofers, I went with a local company that had been here for years.

I think this issue has been largely blown out of proportion. And i think the same thing about Christie supposedly handing Obama the election early and a traitor to his party for doing so, as i have heard Rightwing spokespersons claim.

E.T. says:
The "update" shows a conflicting report:
Major utility companies in New Jersey said that they are welcoming any and all out-of-state crews helping to restore power, and have not refused any non-union contractors.

At least one media report out of Alabama claims that personnel from that state were turned away in Seaside Heights because they were not affiliated with a union.

most of the country was intrigued of seeing a republican and the president working together. but oh no, no the fox news crowd they went ballistic. that one action tells the whole story over the past 4 years. i hope america wises up on such nonsense. most of the posters with dissent to the president, here, are from the 25 percent cesspool that supports such party of no antics. hopefully the other 75 percent state, no more of this b.s. in this election.
