Technically, Toy wasn't a picker either. Known as the "Fastest Thumb in Rock" he used his thumb instead of a flat pick.

I'd have to say:
Lindsey Buckingham
Mark Knopfler
are the top two!

Just saw Maneli Jamal at a local guitar shop a few nights back. About 50 people, great sound and some pretty impressive guitar work.

He plays a Cole Clark guitar and it sounded amazing. There was a C.C. rep. there as well taking questions about these guitars. Quite impressive.

I hear a lot of this (see below) kind of New Age(?) guitar music, usually when I'm getting a massage, and although I find it a bit boring, I can't help but feel very jealous of their fingering skills.

I agree that some of it does get to be the "same old thing" with the tapping and reversed
hands. He did go into some much more straight forward "fingerstyle" and strumming when I saw him and was quite impressive. One of the reasons I like Michael Hedges so much is that he gives you a taste of everything and throws in some great vocals as well.

I'm always impressed, weather or not I "like" what I hear is another matter. And I'm with you, the more those kinds of players can incorporate different stylings during a song, the better. Speaking of great instrumentalists who sings at times, Bireli Lagrene (a French Gypsy) will sometimes sing. What is really strange though, is he sounds a LOT like Frank Sinatra. lolol

I have to agree that Tommy is the best all around picker. His own compositions are outstanding and he sounds like 3 to 4 guitars while he is playing. As if listening isn't awesome enough, one really needs to watch him perform also. He is a fabulous showman as he takes a guitar to its limits. Another attribute Tommy displays is his desire to show every technique he uses. His wish is for everyone to be able to play at his level. Unfortunately most of us will hide our guitars if anyone asks us to play a song they've heard Tommy play. As if his playing and his composing and his showmanship weren't enough, he is one of the finest human beings I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Tom Bacon

I hate to try ranking musicians from best to worst, but I would have to say that of living players, Lindsey Buckingham makes my jaw drop more than most-sometimes I'm afraid his guitar is going to catch on fire he plays it so passionately.
