I'd add Ani Difranco. She has a distinct voice as well as having the guts to not only release her own material but set up an indie labe that has helped bring other artists to the fromt. Also a couple of ather great female singers are Lucy Kaplansky, Melissa Ferrick, Fiona Apple, Allison Krauss as well as a slew of others. These are just the ones that come to mind right now.

I was introduced to Diana Krall about 10 years ago by another singer friend
and was most impressed. It was her tribute to Nat "King" Cole. Bought
every CD after that. The one thing I find a bit off-putting is her sometimes
little "growl" or whine that many female singers use to be "sexy". This
little, I wouldn't say "habit", disappoints me. k.d. lang uses it a lot, and
I think she is a fine singer. She gives me the creeps. A number of very
fine female vocalists have beautiful "instruments", but seem to have no
"ideas". The howlers and the screamers turn me off. Howling and
screaming are no substitute for real feeling. Only my "humble" opinion.
