I'm somewhat out of touch with current pop music, but agree about Christina Aguilera. In appearance, she's looking more and more like a short Barbie Doll, pretty in a very processed way. But it doesn't matter, that voice is a gift. It's kind of a sappy thing to say, but she was born to sing.

i agree she does look manufactured but thats just the way it is now...sad but true...sorta like assembly line singers...

I'm with Diane. Erykah Badu is brilliant, especially as a lyricist and, her voice has a really unique character to it. Having a competent singing voice alone is not enough to make for an impressive artist. Singers with a raw natural talent come a dime a dozen, and I find that the singing generally speaks less to the quality of a piece of music than any other aspect of it. I've heard enough insipid, trite drivel with good singing over the last ten years to make my head explode. And usually, the vocals are little more than showy displays of nonspecific notes and melodies that have little to no relation to anything else going on in the song. But, I find Ms. Badu to be a rich and compelling artist in many ways. Several female "Neo-Soul" artists have produced some fantastic work over the last 10 years; Lauryn Hill and India Arie are two other outstanding female singers that come to mind. Nellie McKay is also really cool.

I'll add Susan Cowsill to the list. Though she's been performing and recording for over 30 years, she only released her first solo record 2 years ago. Prior to going solo, she sang with the Continental Drifters, and way before that was with the the 60's band with her family of the same last name. (Yea, that Cowsill) Her solo record enlists Lucinda Williams, and she also does great covers of the Fairport/Sandy Denny classic Who Knows Where the Time Goes and the Beach Boys' Don't Worry Baby. This is a Roots gem.

Though she can't be considered the best yet because she has a limited body of work, I believe that Joss Stone has hands down the best voice of all female singers in the last 10 years. I don't think it is even close. The scary thing is she is still very young and should only get better.

Vonda Shepard. She has the most beautiful, soothing voice I have ever heard, and she's also a talented pianist and songwriter.

Runners-up:
Dar Williams
Sarah McLachlan
Jewel
Idina Menzel

I've heard many very good female singers lately, Lucinda Williams, Mindy Smith, Allison Kraus, etc. but I instantly recognized the new diva of folky pop a few years ago when I heard the first couple of Norah Jones songs. Yes, she's a major vocal talent (natural) from the old-school, I don't see why people love to get down on her???

I just want to say that K.T. Tunstall and her band are quite good, I'll be watching her (although the Melissa Ethridge sound is very prevalent not that I think that is a bad thing).

Good call, I forgot about Gillian Welch, another cool gal definitely and her guitarist is excellent. I've been meaning to track some of her cds down. I don't explore in this area as much as I should ... there are some good ideas here.
