I think Anne Murray was actually the original singer of "Killing me softly" but her version wasn't released as a single.

The writer of the song was the original singer of Killing Me Softly With His Song, Lori Lieberman, and indeed, she wrote the song about Don McLean after seeing him do a solo concert. I never heard the slasher, serial killer reference before.
