Any interface with phantom power will work. It really depends on what you are wanting to get out of it and how much you want to be able to grow your system before you have to update. I would suggest a Mbox Mini for starters. Pro Tools 8 is a wonderful piece of software, and you can't go wrong with its strong resale value.

If he's a started, Pro Tools 8 would be a hard software to learn. I'd go with mixcraft or Adobe audition and i'd suggest for an audio interface to use the M-Audio Fast Track 2 or the Fast Track pro (depending on how much you wanna spend). Personally i use the fast track pro and it's awesome for my vocals and it sounds absolutely clear and crisp and perfect... i love it. Been using it for about a month now and hasn't gone wrong since.

I disagree... Pro Tools is really simple to use. My 12 and 9 year olds can use it. They also use Garage Band as well. I use Pro Tools exclusively and I have never been happier with the results I get. The only downfall is the proprietary hardware that needs to be used to make the software work. I got over it and it's pretty awesome. Pro Tools recording software IS the Industry Standard in audio production. I have an MBox Mini and also a Digi 002R. Pro Tools works fluidly between them.
