...in the meaning of Christmas apart from its religious significance, the Christian teachings of good will to one and all, of Christian forbearance, of humility, of seeking out any points of commonality you can find with someone...all these are things I believe we should all admire and emulate from Christ's teachings.

And I will always be glad I learned these teachings early on, and eventually learned their truth from trying to do the exact opposite and suffering the consequences.

I believe this children's hymn, whose lyrics anyone in any Christian faith could agree with, along with anyone ecumenical, truly embodies the spirit of Christmas, even though it isn't a Christmas carol:

Love One Another

As I have loved you, love one another
This new commandment, love one another
By this shall men know, ye are my disciples,
If you have love one to another.

As an atheist and a recovering fundamentalist, I said bravo! Good teachings can be found all over the place; from the bible to Calvin & Hobbes to the funny papers. Bravo!

Calvin & Hobbes--great intro to moral philosophy!

Like the one where Calvin's about to jump from the roof holding a sheet as a parachute, and Hobbes asks him if he'd gotten permission to try this from his mom.

Calvin says "Questions you know the answer to you don't need to ask, right?"

That's a shame, I think octopuses are great. Have you seen the mimic octopus?

Nah, I've gone off octopii since that one that predicted the world cup died.

I just can't risk that kind of attachment again.

I'm choking up now just thinking about it.....
