On this day in 1945, the United States, a supposedly christian nation, attacked and destroyed the city of Nagasaki, Japan, with a plutonium nuclear bomb, killing over 70,000 civilians, many women and children.

Pity there is no hell for the perpetrators of this atrocity to go to.

You are unbelievably foolish and need a serious and in-depth history lesson on WWII and the Japanese actions during the war, in particular. Your wheel of ignorance and utter stupidity is spinning so fast, it's blurry. Maybe it will spin off its axis and be forever destroyed against the hard ground of education and knowledge.

Jonathan B. says:
The Japanese were an INSANE bunch who would never have given up (like the Nazis did), fueled as they were by extremist, imperialist, fascist philosophies further inflamed by Japanese notions of "honor". Truman understood this.

Let me ask you something: what would be worse, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or a GROUND INVASION OF JAPAN which would have killed MILLIONS before the Japs ever even thought of surrendering? Furthermore, 100,000 Japanese were killed through conventional bombing since Feb, 1945, and that would have continued up until the invasion. Not to mention that the Japs themselves were exterminating the Chinese in the meantime, at a rate of 200,000/month. With this in mind, a traditional ground invasion and wait for Japan to surrender is immoral in the extreme. The Japs had to be crushed and crushed for good.

The atomic bombing of Japan was a perfectly reasonable military decision that had nothing to do with Christianity or religion. If I were alive then, I would have been happy to personally give the orders to vaporize those cities, thus ending the war and saving millions of lives.

The main issue is the moral bankruptcy of attacking civilians in any war or at any time. Innocent civilians were placed off limits in war for a few centuries in a few places, but in the second world war, new ways to slaughter were invented. That those inventions were available does not mean they HAD to be used, nor does it absolve the guilt of those that chose to use them.

Yes, the Japanese MILITARY were guilty of war crimes -- and many were tried (rightly) and executed (not rightly) for these crimes.

The nuclear weapons should have been demonstrated on a military target (perhaps with warning) which would have achieved the surrender and the end of the war.

Foolish...nice memory you have. Your bleeding-heart know-nothing liberal mind doesn't know what its talking about. It took TWO bombs to make them surrender. Japan was given a chance to surrender after Hiroshima and refused. Both cities were military targets. Hiroshima was the HQ of the 5th Division and 2nd General Army, which commanded the entire defense for southern Japan. The city was also a supply and logistics base providing a communications center and assemby point for Japanese troops. General Spaatz also reported the city was one of the only ones that did NOT have a POW camp, making it more of a priority target.

Nagasaki was one of the largest seaports in Japan and was heavily involved with the production of ordnance, ships, other materials, and was home to the Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works and a major sea route supplier to its 'colonies'. The city was the secondary target after Kokura, another major military target, which was obscured by cloud cover. A primary production facility for Arisaka rifles was located there. The city of Kyoto was taken off a target list due to its Japanese cultural significance and being home to a large number of intellectuals. So much for your hate argument.

And as far as your rubbish thought about warning them, which we did, contrary to your ignorant statement:

The leaflets dropped after the Hiroshima bombing...they certainly wouldn't have taken it seriously had they not seen it once...and they STILL didn't surrender afterwards...even though Russia had turned against them. Surely you detect a theme of stubborness. Many Japanese would rather die than surrender to the 'inferior' Americans. Not honorable.

"TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE:
America asks that you take immediate heed of what we say on this leaflet.

We are in possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man. A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s can carry on a single mission. This awful fact is one for you to ponder and we solemnly assure you it is grimly accurate.

We have just begun to use this weapon against your homeland. If you still have any doubt, make inquiry as to what happened to Hiroshima when just one atomic bomb fell on that city.

Before using this bomb to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, we ask that you now petition the Emperor to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better and peace-loving Japan.

You should take steps now to cease military resistance. Otherwise, we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war.

EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.

ATTENTION JAPANESE PEOPLE. EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.
Because your military leaders have rejected the thirteen part surrender declaration, two momentous events have occurred in the last few days.

The Soviet Union, because of this rejection on the part of the military has notified your Ambassador Sato that it has declared war on your nation. Thus, all powerful countries of the world are now at war with you.

Also, because of your leaders' refusal to accept the surrender declaration that would enable Japan to honorably end this useless war, we have employed our atomic bomb.

A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s could have carried on a single mission. Radio Tokyo has told you that with the first use of this weapon of total destruction, Hiroshima was virtually destroyed.

Before we use this bomb again and again to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, petition the emperor now to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better, and peace-loving Japan.

Act at once or we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war.

EVACUATE YOUR CITIES."

Do history a favor and learn a little. You are entitled to be ignorant and have your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

Well stated Mr. Elliott. It's amazing what a tiny bit of historical knowledge and a massive amount of hate-filled ignorance can do to make one sound foolish in the face of facts.

I am not sure where you got your bogus info but if you read the Wiki Entry, you'll see that the atomic bombs were never mentioned in any surrender offers or proposals to Japan. Also the attack on Hiroshima was not foreshadowed and was carefully calculated to have maximum "psychological impact" (i.e. maximum terrorizing effect with maximum civilian casualties.) Oppenheimer and others proposed military targets and demonstrations, which were rejected.

The US had enriched enough materials for approximately 10 bombs, some of higher power than Hiroshima.

I know its hard for you to accept, but your country committed one of the most heinous crimes in the history of humanity and will forever live in infamy for it.

Rwanda goes on the list, sure, however it was a crime of inaction, rather than a cold calculation to kill and maim women and children with a terrifying weapon.
