G. M. Seed says:
Luke 14:26
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple."

G.M., you might enjoy Bishop Spong's "Sins of Scripture". I'm not sure if he addresses that particular point, but he does take a lot of that stuff and dissect it, bringing the true inner meaning to the light and discarding the chaff.

Jack Vix says:
1 Timothy 2:12
"I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet."

I think the troll and the dummy are right, it's all in how you interpret it. There's gotta be deeper meaning in this. /sarcasm

G. M. Seed says:
Maybe I misinterpreted the words of "Jesus" incorrectly in Luke 14:26.

Instead I'll look at Luke 19:27:

"But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.'"

If Jesus was not God then Luke 14:26 would be sick. Jesus is God manifested in the flesh, 1 Timothy 3:16. Since, Jesus is God look at this verse, "Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway." God wants to be number one in your life.

Nancy,

The last time you recommended this book, to me I think, Harper still had it price fixed. Now, it is quite reasonable and off my "wish list". Thanks for re-posting it --- I had been waiting for the rebate for some price fixed books from the lawsuit, but less than $4 isn't bad. BTW, there seem to be two kindle prices, which is a bit odd!

Jack,

And yet women are allowed to preach, in some translations, if their head is covered? I Cor 11 (Phillips)

But in the case of a woman, if she prays or preaches with her head uncovered it is just as much a disgrace as if she had it closely shaved.

As for teaching exercising authority over anyone, I'm sure today's school teachers would like a bit more authority, and respect, than their students seem to give them .

Jesus is not God
the bible proves that
God is the FATHER of Jesus
Jesus is the SON of God
they are two separate people

That one has been proven to have been written by someone other than Paul, obviously some misogynist who couldn't handle that women were at least as smart as the men in their congregation.

Astrocat says:
Oh, Kindle. I couldn't figure out what you meant by "price-fixed", because I get most of my books from Abebooks.com and the prices are usually very low.

Jack Vix says:
What about these ones?

1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Ephesians 5:24
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands

MDS: ... why don't people leave Jesus alone and go on with their pathetic lives? ....

Chuck: Because religion kills.

Are those from the same guy that said this?

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
(Galatians 3:28)

Nah ... there are no contradictions in the Bible.

Nancy Davison: That one has been proven to have been written by someone other than Paul, obviously some misogynist who couldn't handle that women were at least as smart as the men in their congregation.

Chuck: Give credit where credit is due. God is the responsible misogynist. "Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?" (Lamentations 3:37) In as much as it is in the Holy Book, it does seem that God wanted it there.

Chuck: What I really like about that verse is the one that precedes it. "God is not the author of confusion"! Well, I guess that leaves little wiggle room. Women keep you mouths shut in church!

Added by scribes who were of the same ilk as whoever wrote Timothy.

Oh, please Chuck. Surely you don't think "God" dictated every line, and that there was no human agency, no human perfidy, involved?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 11, 2012 5:04:38 PM PST
Astrocat says:
Well, whoever wrote that has caused no end of confusion and abuse down the centuries. And is one of the reasons many women have simply given up on Christianity.

Nancy,

The price fix was the agreements to set the prices, hardback included. As I recall Amazon was the target, but it was because of other agreements: Books were withdrawn if Amazon sold them for less. Kindle is a side-effect.

I'll check out Abebooks --- but I'm trying to cut down on paper in this house --- not succeeding, so it is only a goal!

Nancy,

If you can find a cheap copy you really do need to read: When God Was a Woman. It talks about the insecurities of men, at the time!
