Heard today:

State of Independence - Donna Summer (this was actually a cover). If you thought Donna Summer was only good for disco you are wrong. About the song - I remember years ago (circa 1984/5) my English Literature teacher played this song for us when we were doing a book called "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. In summary the book was about a fictional village in Nigeria that fell victim to colonialism and eventually fought against the white man's rule. I didn't quite understand the song then (still don't get it 100%) but then I did know that colonialism was not necessarily a good thing.

What station were you listening to Reggie. I think almost all of Anita Baker's music will receive substantial airplay as olides in the future.

Hang On In There - Johnny Bristol

This is a classic case of saying it without saying it - he is not giving the person he is singing to general encouragement - the young 'uns of today could learn from these lyrics.

I love that song! Goes to show you how a situation can bring back a memory, I was in a store or office building, I can't remember where, and these two older gentlemen and older lady were talking and when she left, one of the gentlemen said to her "It will get better. Hang on in there baby!

The lyric stayed in my head all day. I hadn't heard that song in years! Came home and downloaded.

Andy B says:
It is a song with a lot of emotion.

Somehow I don't think the gentleman and Johnny Bristol were talking about the same thing.

No he wasn't, It was just when he said it, the song stayed in my head.

Oh I know he didn't mean the same thing Johnny was!

Does this happen to anyone else? One song has the same "feel" as another one?

'Hang On In There' always, always, always reminds me of:

Where's The Love We Used to Know

When I listen to one, I just gots to listen to the other! On my playlists, these 2 songs are always next to each other!

Heard today: Talk to Me - Anita Baker. That was the first cut from her album "Compositions" - in my opinion that is still her best album to date. There is not a bad song or filler on it.

Yes. Happens whenever I'm creating a playlist. Can't think of any examples at the moment.

Heard today:

"Tell Everybody" - Herbie Hancock - The percussion by Bill Summers is off the hook!

Also heard - "It's The Pride" - Isley Brothers - this is one funky jam! The bass riff - as a child hearing this I thought it was "fascinating" (pardon my pun). I had this on wax and used to play it almost everyday in my summer vacation. We had one of those all-in-one stereo record players/FM/AM radio/8-track where you used to cue up the record on the spindle, it would drop down onto the turntable plate and then the needle would swing over and start to play. Man I used to kill that thing!

"It's You I Love" - Teddy Pendergrass
"So Won't You Stay" - Brothers Johnson

These are ballads that you don't hear often.

Oh man Andy, that's one of my favorite TP cuts! If I heard someone else play it, I might lose my mind.

Oh yeah, that TP jam is it BB and Andy. Heard Johnny Gill sing today (on Hoda and Kathy Lee), "It Would Be You," from his newest album, Still Winning. Nice. Always liked Johnny and good to hear him back singing solo again.

Collette, Brooklyn, Andy: I'm always learning new stuff from these pages. I had NEVER heard of Teddy's "Its You I Love!" until today so I looked it up. Great song - somehow I managed to miss it entirely, and it's not on any album as far as I can see. Was this one of those single-only (or b-side) releases?

Heard today - "Jam" - LTD - this is one funky jam! (pardon the pun) hadn't heard that one in years.

My DJ here in Barbados is on a roll!

Also heard today: "Stand Up and Cheer" - System - wooooooweeee that is my stuff!

...And.."Who's Getting It Now" - Chocolate Milk. I think this was an underrated group but real real funky.

..and..."Get Up" - Brass Construction

He even played a song by Kashif and the Tavares that I was not familiar with. In doing some checking on the net I see that the Tavares had, on their LoveLine album, songs written by Kashif, Brenda Russell and even Al Jarreau. Bass was played by Nathan East.

A funk anthem, for sure.

Son turned me on to Mayer Hawthorne, white soul singer from Detroit area. Pretty good. Have to keep a little current, you know.
Are you or others familiar with him?

"How You Like Me Now" - A song from a UK (rock?) band called The Heavy. I'm watching some NBA game and it came up in a miller beer commercial. Pretty good James impression. Nice jam.
