70s Soul says:
We're coming to the end of the Presidential Primaries. I know you've heard things from the campaigners that made you think of certain songs. Please name them -- whether the songs themselves are political, protest, inspirational, or "one-liners." An example of a one-liner is since I heard Hillary Clinton say she'd "obliterate Iran," the line in "Computer Age (Push the Button) by Newcleus plays in my head every time I see her image: "Push the Button."

Please limit responses to R&B, Soul, Funk, and Reggae "performers" ; )

Hey 70s Soul,

My first thought always is, 'What's Going On", "What's Happening Brother', and "Save The Children"/Marvin Gaye

Fight The Power - Isley Brothers (1975)

- is probaly the first mainstream/radio song to include a "bad" word without being censored ... "When I rolled with the punches; I got knocked on the ground; With all this bulls*@t going down" ...

ps: They ought to let Ronald out of jail ...

BrooklynBorn says:
Yeah Lade, I remember as a kid wanting to badly sing it. But not bad enough to receive a slap in the mouth. LOL!

In reply to an earlier post on May 28, 2008 12:59:34 PM PDT
You included reggae, but still, this is REALLY stretching your guidelines, lol. The Police were heavily influenced by reggae, so...sue me :D

I have to post my favorite of all songs directed at politicians, and that expresses how I feel about all politics these days:

Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission
And no-one's jamming their transmission
'Cos when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

Reggie says:
I always like the words to Prince's "Sign of the Times". They are as true today as when he wrote them.

I'm with you, BrooklynBorn [laughing]. Momma wasn't havin' it.

Lade, the radio station in my area censored it. They played "bull_beep." Maybe you're confusing the radio with the album since everyone had that album.

Hey Vanessa!

Classic. Great choices and great "get out the vote" songs.

"Ronnie Talk to Russia" is very necessary too -- Just substitute "Russia" with USA (pronounced us-a) and Iran

Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin - acappella tune used as a sort of unofficial campaign song for George H. Bush's 1988 presidential campain. McFerrin, a Democrat was not too happy ...

WAR ~ Bob Marley

What life has taught me
I would like to share with
Those who want to learn...

Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say war

That until there are no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
Me say war

That until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
Dis a war

Lade says:
When Obama often repeats his "change" line - you remember Sam Cooke ...

I was born by the river in a little tent
And just like the river, I've been running ever since
It's been a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come

It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come ...

For Obama - after he beats Hillary...

We Are The Champions --Queen

"We ARE The Champions, my Friends, and we'll KEEP ON FIGHTING TIL THE END"...

**New addition**
Technically, this is not Soul, but I feel the passion in Freddie Mercury's voice, so I had to add it in there..

May I also add that I was originally for Edwards. If Obama/Edwards was the ticket I would be happy as a jewel thief in Tiffanys...

I'm with you with "A Change Is Gonna Come" and it's my screenname on a political news blog site. And like Lade, I think of Barack Obama

But while your other two are hope inspired, they don't inspire me to speak out and take action

Your post brought a HUGE smile to my face imagining your scenario -- minus Hillary.

I can imagine representation from every US demographic dancing to this at the victory rally
