Not at all BigBad... look 'em up if you have doubts. However, I am skeptical like you. I'm sure that this can occur. Is anybody verifying some of the zanier ones?
Like: "No Ruff Stuff", whom my cousin swears is a local band in Orange County, CA.

That's a great name to just get people in the door. Big letters up on the marquee "Free Beer" Tonight.

You'll have a pretty pissed crowd when they found the truth though.

I found We Have Band on AllMusic.com, and Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine on Grooveshark -- I seriously doubt I could make up better names myself!

I have a "Carter USM" album (as their name was abbreviated to) called 'Worry Bomb' from 1995. It's actually very good - they're a British Indie pop/rock band which fuses samples and electro-beats into their music.

Gena, thanks for the tip about AllMusic.com... I just spent 20 minutes there.

No problemo. I just found another band there, called Hunx. :D

Spinner.com is another good source -- this morning they have a piece on a band called Said the Whale (yet another addition to my list of what-the-what names)...

Glenn Philips "Toad the Wet Sprocket"
Afro Celt Sound System
The Electric Prunes (had a hit song "Kyrie Eleison" that was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Easy Rider.)

Oh, I forgot one... when I was a kid, we used to play this stupid song by a crazy group until we rolled over from laughter. Any one bresides me ever heard it?

"Banana, What A Crazy Fruit" by Rusty Canyon & The Banana Boys

The Electric Prunes may have had that song on the Easy Rider soundtrack, but they're better known for their debut single, "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night".

Found this on Wiki regarding how "Widespread Panic" got their name?
Due to anxiety problems, lead guitarist Mike Houser used to have the nickname "Panic". One day he came home and announced that he didn't want to be just "Panic", he wanted to be "Widespread Panic".

They were named after a movie "All The Fine Young Cannibals"

Another funny named band which also took their name from a film was They Might Be Giants.

BigBad, nice add thanks. I've heard of the movie (and the group) "They Might Be Giants", but the movie and inpiration for Fine Young Cannibals called "All The Fine Young Cannibals" escapes me. I'm heading over to Imdb.com right now.

Add these to the D-list:
Devo
Deee-Lite
Da-Da

About 10 years back at the park a band was playing called: "The Yellow Snow Dreamers" and they were pretty good. The singer said that they only do gigs in the summer and I thought that was a bit odd.

re: "The Yellow Snow Dreamers".

Named after the Frank Zappa song, no doubt...

There was a house of bad girls operating out of Fairbanks, Alaska in the seventies called "The House of Nanooky" and Snooky is pregnant with a baby beast....
What's a good name for a baby Snooky?

I came across some new bad band names:
Arctic Monkeys
Phish
Mr. Mister
MxPx (The now official name of the band which was an abbreviation of "Magnified Plaid")
Fenix*TX
WHAM!

Plooky, sounds like something you would find in a toilet after Snooky was done throwing up!
