Oingo Boingo was always a silly name to me. Great music, but just plain silly.

I don't know if anyone mentioned Luscious Jackson yet...their name was inspired by one of Wilt Chamberlain's teammates on the 1967 NBA Champion Philadelphia 76'ers, Lucious Jackson.

Funny stuff! Tripping Daisy and the Beat Farmers are the only ones I've heard of; I'm guessing The Piano Has Been Drinking are named after the Tom Waits tune.

Y'ever hear of Penis Flytrap? Near as I can tell, they only have one song ("Cemetary Girl") on Grooveshark, but I thought the name was worth mentioning... :D

Gena...
Penis Flytrap is a great addition to this discussion. Thanks for that. I haven't heard of it, but I have heard of Venus Envy.
As for The Piano Has Been Drinking... the jury is still out on that one... let's just say my source was sketchy.

Lothar and the Hand People

Lothar and the Hand People...does anyone know the story behind that group? Lothar is NOT a person, but rather a musical instrument, a theremin, the same instrument that makes the weird noises you hear on "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys.

From what I've heard, all the tracks on the LP (which came out on Capitol circa 1967) feature Lothar, the theremin.

Nice! Whenever I see that name, though, it reminds me the '80s SNL skit "Lothar of the Hill People"... LOL

RK - And I always thought it was the lead singer... you have some great insights man, I salute you!

The instrument used on "Good Vibrations" was, according to Wikipedia, the Tannerin or the Electro-Thermin of which there was only one ever made.

I have a theremin that I made from a kit - quite a hoot - especially if you set it up where people walk by and it makes its sound!

Here's a crazy one:

"Moo Moo The Shark Dog & The Killer Pigs", they did an album entitled "Children's Songs For Disturbed Children."

I found this group while doing an internet search for an album title.

I once heard of a punk band called Torn Anus. I am not sure why they would go there but oh well.

Them

It's actually a funny name, when you stop and think about it. It reminds me of another band name from years later, The The.

@ Chet Fakir - That's a great list. We've already seen a few of those listed here, but you've listed some not seen before. I was kinda surprised to see you list The Beatles here, but then now that I think about it I must have been so used to their name that I had forgotten what an odd name it was originally. Thanks!
