I read everything over, so I believe these are new to the list (I skimmed over a lot of great songs that I want to hear right now).

Cat Power- (Can't Get No) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) - what makes it extra compelling is she never sings the chorus.
Cat Power-Bathysphere (Smog)
Emily Wells- Juicy (Notorious B.I.G.)
The Civil Wars- Dance Me to the End of Love (Leonard Cohen)
Tori Amos- Angie (Rolling Stones)
The Bird and the Bee- Rich Girl (Hall and Oates)
Limit to Your love-James Blake (Feist)
Across the Universe-Fiona Apple (Beatles)
When U Were Mine-Cyndi Lauper (Prince)
To Live Is To Fly-Cowboy Junkies (Townes Van Zandt)
Don't Change-The Audreys (INXS)

...so many more, but I'll stop. It's addictive trying to conjure them up. ^.^

Cat Powers covers are always amazing, her voice literally gives me the chills. Her cover of Werewolf is haunting, her cover of Sea Of Love makes me long for a lost love, hell, even that 2 minute car commercial of her doing a cover of David Bowie's Space Oddity was memorable.

Here's a very cool update of a total crap song. If this version was around 25 years ago, it would have been great at my wedding!

@SF:

Red Sails in the Sunset was recorded many times; Domino's version is only one of these covers . I think I first heard a doo-wop version. Because of your endorsement, I may have to check out the Beatles version. I knew they recorded quite a few covers, but I haven't heard this.

@James Walsh:

The Sonics "Have Love Will Travel" is also a cover of a Richard Berry song. Have you heard either version? It seems that both "Have Love Will Travel" and "Louie, Louie" have become garage rock standards.

@Alysha25:

Soft Cell's version is the best known and the one most people think of as the original, but it was originally done by singer Gloria Jones in the 1960s. These versions sound quite different from each other.

Every time I hear a song for you, I think of Donny Hathaway's version instead of the original by Leon Russell. My favorite cover though is probably Marvin Gaye's version of the Beatles' Yesterday. Singer Bettye LaVette has done some great covers also, and from diverse sources. A recent album contained songs by British singers and bands from the 1960s and 1970s.
