The only girls I have ever known that liked the band "Rush" are ones that were musicians themselves, so they could appreciate the musicianship. Every other girl I've know have hated Rush. Rush is the worst band you can put on if you want to pick up chicks.

Why is that? Is it because they sing about outer space and fantasy stuff which is too "nerdy"? But girls like The Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars movies which are about the same things!

Is it because their lead singer, Geddy Lee, doesn't have a manly enough voice, and isn't macho enough? Is it because they go into long instrumental jams which girls can't relate to, and don't have enough catchy choruses?

Are their any girls out there that can explain this? I've been wondering this for a long time.

I am female and have loved Rush for 27 years. I am not a musician but I do appreciate the intracacy of their music and enjoy Peart's lyrics.

BTW, J Kat, way to be stuck in the 70s with that "they sing about outer space and fantasy stuff" comment. Have you listened to anything they've done since Hemispheres?

"Is it because their lead singer, Geddy Lee, doesn't have a manly enough voice, and isn't macho enough?"
Give me a break. I hate that whole "macho" poser image so many men subscribe to as being "real".

Maybe your problem isn't with compatible musical tastes but with calling women "girls" and "chicks". We don't really care for that too much. Like Daizy, I also wonder how old you are, but unlike him/her I suspect you're younger rather than older.

Anyway, FWIW, there are several Rush fan message boards on the net with plenty of female fans posting on them.

BTW, Daizy, Rush's last studio album was released in 2007 and they just finished the second leg of a major tour behind it in July. Shows how in touch "u r", huh?

Will, just because you don't like them is no reason to resort to personal insults.

P.S. -- Happy 56th birthday today to Neil Peart!

I am a girl and have been to several Rush concerts and have seen many women there, of all ages. Even groups of women with no obvious "guy" dragging them along. If you want to pick up chicks they are probably not the best band because they are not a "romantic" sound and you usually want romance when getting girls (I assume). Or, maybe you are just hanging out with the wrong type of girl. :)

Since they do not get a lot of radio play time you really have to be introduced to them by another fan, and you have to be the kind of person (boy or girl) who enjoys intricacy and depth in rock (which some people may think is an oxymoron, listening to radio today). If you are not seriously looking for a new type of music to enjoy you will probably not become a big fan. Either way, if you want a girl to like Rush I recommend bringing her to a concert. Even if she hates the music and thinks Lee is a freak she will be most impressed by the lasers. /grin

I love Rush, and I'm a chick. :-) I've always been a big fan of their thoughtful, intelligent lyrics, and intricate arrangements. (Then, I've always been a "nerd"... AD&D or Piers Anthony, anyone?) Oddly enough, my husband, who is a rock and metal afficiando, HATES Rush. So sad... he's missing out on some of the best ear candy ever.

Their last album was called SNAKES & ARROWS released in , 2007. It hit the Billboard charts at # 3 in it's first week , after more than 30+ years together.

Their 2007 tour was their largest grossing tour in their history and the second leg in 2008 was the number 8th tour in N.A. of the summer concerts. This year they were featured in , ROLLING STONE Mag. and received a star on the , HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME.

The only bands to have more GOLD records in the U.S. are , THE STONES , THE BEATLES , and they are tied with KISS in the TOP 5 of all time.

I hope that , that answers your questions?

knrnr and all the other woman on this board.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to hear there are some woman out there who appreciate Rush.

I didn't meant to be sexist, I just asked because someone brought up Rush in another post I always wondered why chicks don't like them. I'm usually embarrassed to tell woman I like them, because of the responses I get. I knew this would anger some women, but I was just playing. As far as calling you girls and chicks, well what do you want to be called? Is woman cool? You can call me dude anytime.

Yeah I've listened to Rush albums since Hemispheres, even saw them on the Vapor Trails concert. I was just thinking maybe the subject matter turned woman off. And like Will said I see mostly dudes at their concerts trying to play drums like Neal Peart.

Like I said, I didn't mean to insult, I was just having fun. But there does seem to be a lot of woman who only listen to music because their attracted to the lead singer, or because it's got a catchy chorus, or is something they can dance to. Just what I've noticed in my 39 years of life.

Your post made me laugh! Yeah maybe I should bring a chick to the concert so she could trip out on the lasers! That would be cool! :D

His views may be a bit too conservative for some. Doesn't help that he's kinda chubby either.

'cause listening to Rush is like listening to math.

I like math just fine, but I don't wanna listen to it. And songs about trees fighting with each other kinda blow, to be honest.

JKat says:
But twistygirl, if you like math, does that mean you have an analytical or logical mind? So wouldn't the lyrics that metaphor society thru trees be intriguing? Wouldn't listening to their complex melodies and rhythm changes inspire your analytical side?

I think most people that don't like Rush is because they don't like the singing. I don't think the singing's that good either. Geddy was just a screacher from their first album to 2112, and now he's voice sounds kinda wimpy and at times annoying. His voice was pretty good on their albums in-between from Farewell to Kings to Grace Under Pressure, which contains most of the songs they play on the radio (particularly from Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves).

But most Rush fans like me don't listen to them because of his voice. We love the complex instrumentation, and all the bass, drum, and guitar solos and parts. I just like to rock out to the jams, and I like how they change melodies and tempos a lot. I hate monotonous music that has the same melody and rhythm all the way thru like techno and rap.

I find the lyrics interesting because they don't talk about the same cliches your hear in rock, but they definetly are not romantic, and probably have nothing in them that would turn anyone on sexually. So I think this, and the singing, and the fact that they aren't dance music, is why a lot of woman don't like them. Is that right?

Right on, Disco....and that whole pill popping, hypocritical gas bag meatball thing is probably a total turnoff as well.
